I have 1 cassette tape, 2 vinyl LP versions and 2 CD copies, so I purchased it on 5 occasions.

I own Parade on vinyl and CD right now. My first copy was from Columbia House on cassette. I had moved out of my mom's house to my dad's 98 miles away. When I went back to get some of my stuff, my brother tried to steal my tape but I found it. I later owned it on CD in the Navy, then CD again years later. I'm probably on my 4th or 5th CD copy.

i own four copies of parade on cd. it's the only prince album i have
more than twice. don't ask me how i ended up with four, i just did..

it's my fav prince album ever, so that might have something to do
with it. a copy for the car, a copy for the stereo, a copy for work,
and an extra, just in case, lol.

I got my cd from a flea market for $8

Cheaper than buying it in a store.

I remember reading an article a couple of years ago where record companies wanted to control people's digital content. Meaning, if you bought a CD, and ripped it to your hard drive, then later ditched the CD (either by selling it, or throwing it away, or giving it away, but somehow relinquishing your ownership of it), then they wanted you to delete those digital files you ripped as well. They considered you "leasing" or borrowing the album. So if you don't own a physical copy anymore, then you can't have the digital file on your computer.

As to your point, I don't hesitate to rebuy an album at a used store. I've purchased Parade new about 7 times over the years. If I can find a used copy in perfect condition at Last Vestige here, or at Blue Note Records, I'll get it. Prince has already made, and spent, that money. It's the same case if I own a vinyl, but not CD, of an album. I have no qualms about downloading it from a torrent or something to have a digital copy.

U mostly find ALL classic prince(pre lovesexy) on Vynal in Used record Stores today.

.... Now that Prince is a super ICON...and Re- "famed" himself... all of those old records izzz sealed in nice wrap & cost over $17.99 each??

As you know, the digital firestorm brought on by the recording industry was and still is an attempt to get laws put into place for the relatively new medium - while they have a chance.

All that said, I try to support artists by purchasing new products when I can. If I don't respect the artist, I will happily obtain their material in a clandestine fashion. Case in point: Rock And Roll Jesus by Kid Rock. He's a true asshole, so I did the digital copy thing.

I also agree that downloading music that I've already purchased or is out of print via torrents gives me no moral qualms.

I still have the cd I bought in '89 (I'd bought the cassette back in '86).

CD was still quite new to me then, and I clearly remember being amazed to hear that the kick drum on Girls and Boys starts playing eighth notes during Prince's 'rap'... I hadn't noticed that on the cassette!

The record companies are the greediest bunch of fuckers since the mafia. They're desperate to keep their golden parachute in place, and keep their pockets padded, while trying to dictate laws about ownership. Remember a couple of years ago when Sony CDs were trying to install some sort of program on PCs covertly. Mac users found the problem because a Mac computer always asks for your password before doing something like that. Sony said they'd stop doing it, but there were still disks coming out that had it on them for a while. Every change I have to stick it to them, I will. But I too support the artists I enjoy. But old shit? Pffft, I'm buying used.

Im on my second copies of Purple Rain, ATWIAD, Parade and SOTT on CD. I have them on vinyl and have had them on tape as well.

now that i have ripped them to my hhd I won be buying them again even if they are unplayable.

That Sony debacle ended in a class-action lawsuit by Phillips - the developers of the red book CD standard(they were quite pissed) and consumers, and put an end to CD ant-copy software. It actually fucked up many computers. I only had one disc with copy protection on it and it was the Foo Fighters "In Your Honor". The
'protection' was easily bypassed on my Mac. I didn't dare put it on my PC.

I remember being there on the day of release, I paid like $20.00 for a cab to buy a cassette of it (I was stationed on a ship, so a little tape deck is all I had), and the cab driver was nice enough to play it for me.

Actually, I've seen all of his 80's catalogue and more as if they've restocked him for some reason.
