Prince, please have fun again. Prince, your recent music is self-consciousness. Like you're "trying to be" this or that. You often succeed, but the music is contrived. You TRY to be musically/harmonically complex. You TRY to offer this or that social commentary. You TRY to be current, or else traditional. It always sounds like there's some goal - some idea of what "good music" is, that you're trying to live up to.
I don't want 1984 again. But what I miss about the earlier music is that it didn't seem so self-conscious. You didn't have to throw crazy chord progressions in, or make noble political statements, or keep up with other people's standards - for the music to be good. You just funked. Prince, please forget about the "shoulds". Toss the superego. Just have fun in 2010. Again. Police ain't got no gun. U don't have 2 run. Any co-signers? | |
