I have spent most of my life as an immense Prince fan. However, I have no hope whatsoever that he will do anything interesting again. There have been a few moments of pleasing music in the last ten or so years, but the Prince who put out songs that didn't sound like anything else, that had great vocal arrangements, the Prince who could allow healthy collaboration, and who didn't record music out of fear of being irrelevant is long gone.
For me, you'd have to go back well over a decade to find an album that was interesting and high-calibur.
Why am I here? I think I was bored and I sometimes check this site out, but I have never been less enthusiastic about Prince.

... then it's time to do something about it. I on the other hand would not be bored.

I agree. I've been been bored by Prince music for years now (at least since Larry Graham entered the picture). The problem is - I won't let go of the thrill I felt during the Exodus era -- it's the same man, so I keep thinking the next new thing may be it.

Therein lies the reason why us "bored" fans still come here, why we still come back -- because we have hope that he'll thrill us again. We're like Charlie Brown running to kick the ball of Prince music greatness and Lucy (aka Prince) pulls the ball away from his every time. yet we keep trying to kick it.

You will find many posters here who are apparently bored with Prince. Why they are posting here will always stay a mystery to me.

no, you are not alone. many of us are bored with his stuff lately.

i imagine that a lot of it is he was always best when up against a challenge. and he's managed to eliminate anything that challenges him from his career. he's surrounded by yes men, has no managament, no record label, no one to challenge him or provide any viewpoint other than his own view regurgitated to make him happy.

it's sad. he's a genius artist who has become content enough to put out tepid, uninspired, and rushed art.

Not to me. I consider myself to have "grown" with Prince's music. I hardly listen to his old stuff and find myself listening to mostly stuff from this decade.

As for being bored, I'm not. However, tired of his marketing strategies....YES! I liked the way he did Lotus at Target, but I despised the site.

Couldn't have said it any better nod

Also, the fact that there's no competition or rivalry to stir him up nowadays left him even more content.

I've always found Prince at his best whenever there was direct competition against him,,,,,it made him more engaged in his work. Now, you get the "been there, done that" vibe from his music.

ok well i think we give prince too much credit ... he writes good songs sometimes .. with the right people to bounce off of he does the most amazing work of all time .. there are a lot of albums i cant really sit thru ... i think to assume he can just go from tons of talented help to some kind of superhero that can play everything and make it as interesting as those 7 or 10 people in his band family etc.. did .. i think thats a lot of pressure .. he couldnt do it .. thus we got some thunkers .. but i think he has been improving lately as in his albums are getting more bearable and still a couple great moments where as before it was i need to turn this off bad at times still the highs are not quite as high as before ... but hes gettin there .. chelsae was pretty good as was fury so as much as yeah its still more interesting to listen to his older work for the millionth time then to try to sit thru mr. goodnite with out swearing u will never buy a prince album again because it sucks so bad .. i believe he has been branching out trying different things musically with the jazz and rock guitar and bria and tamar etc.. that doesnt mean they are great but i think he is willing to see what he can do ... hes done the rap the christian rock the raunchy the sex bump of high that news album u know i think its gonna come together soon ... these cds are all practice .. he had to do his sketchwork for a while now that he has a fuller pallet he is ready to paint .. the paintings are slowly getting a little better and i think hes gonna lay the best of his career on us soon ... happens all the time with rock stars ... they are awesome then they lose most of their audience put out a bunch of experimental and dramatically different music that sounds nothing like the music that got them famous ... and then some kind of switch kicks in and u get time out of mind or harvest moon or the last couple jonny cash records ... u know niel young was doing this new wave shit for a couple years with synthesizers and drum machines ... bob dylan went off the map for a while too no one was diggin his records ... so yeah i think prince is gonna hit us with it in the next couple of years ... its gonna be good ... so to respond to the thread topic .. he he .... i'm just a little bored but not TOTALLY bored.

it's something you notice in a lot of gifted people. many need a challenge to be able to really produce something inspired. when the bar is low, they get bored and just start phoning it in and producing output that is barely par.

it happens with a lot of gifted kids in school, for a more recognizible reference. not that i would ever label myself gifted, but i was one of those kids. i was so bored by how low the bar was, i could barely bring myself to do the required work to pass. it used to frusterate the hell out of my teachers.

maybe it's just a common gemini trait, though, as i sense this post is gonna target me.

but i need a challenge. he needs a challenge. as an adult, i have found it is the only way to motivate myself. he, unfortunately, is so surrounded by yes men who praise every fart of a song that he writes.

there is no one who tells him "you know... i know you can do better."

i think he needs someone. a manager, an executive... shit, even a friend.

Here is something to think about, I buy a new Prince album almost every year... (depending on whether or not he releases one) and its the only music that keeps me buying music. There is a lot of new stuff out there, but his new stuff is the only stuff that keeps me looking forward. That says volumes, and this WHOLE damn congregation needs to say AMEN.

I guess he would get boring if one played him to death. No one artist should consume ones entire audio spectrum for too long. Mix things up!

My favorite artist just put out her first new music more than 10 years and I never once got tired of her. Its all about moderation.
