Friend, Lover, Sister, Mother/ Wife appreciation

Just had to start a thread on this song ya'll.

I love when this song pops up on my ipod; I mean, with a title like that, I knew this song couldn't be bad. I love the airyness of the song, it has a warm texture, which build, and have space to grow on the song. The understated guitar parts really belie the tenderness of the song in general. The little touches, like the wind blowing during the lyric "wind" the wedding bells throughout the song make the track that more special. And those backing vocals are just as passionate as the main vocals

"If I ever held her hand, twas was cause I never held yours"
Straight church right there til the end.

And then when the song ends, you don't realize 7 minutes have passed.
I thought "Adore" was his ultimate ballad, but THIS IS WHERE ITS AT.

whew.

Great song- sound is simple, the lyrics are pure love, and I too love the gospel feel. I would love to see this live in a full blown gospel presentation!

I love this song. During this period it was the loneliest time in my life. Then I met my wife and you know I dedicate this song to her now.

Simply one of the best love songs ever. The lyrics are simply beautiful, so are the chord progression, the arrangement and the harmonies in the backing vocals.

Probably may favourite song on Emancipation.

Yes one of the best love songs every by P or anyone else. It is way underrated/underappreciated. I guess we can sort of thank Mayte for inspiring this song and some of the others on the album..but if it wasn't her Prince probably would have found another muse.

Probably. But the thing is, you could rank songs like U Gonna C Me and Here but while those songs have a song melody/lyric, the thought and passion isn't the same level as F.L.S.M/W
His love songs sound less inspired.

I disagree. I thing U r gonna C me and Here are very inspired as well. But the songs are more introspective, and succesfully so IMO (actually i rate Ure gonna ce me as his best song of the decade and here in the top 10), while the Emancipation songs are more odes to Mayte.

Emancipation was a bad time for me as I was going through a bitter breakup with a young lady I was involved with very deeply at the time. I couldn't afford the album at the time cause I had lost my job due to her infidelity. I was staying with a friend & his parents in their basement & his dad was a huge Prince fan as well. I remember his father getting the cd for christmas that year & the 1st chance I got I put on cassette. Some of the cuts on the set really hit close to home, but with what I was going through at the time I could see through all the dark clouds the beauty in this song. I ended up involved with the young lady again & 8 months later, same thing. From that moment "Damned If I Do" became my song for her instead of FMSLW! Still a good song on a great cd!!!!!

Preach it. One of the most phenomenally beautiful songs ever made IMO.

Which is why I cringe when people make sweeping judgements about his post 80s songs. There's a whole lot of excellent material after that time and a good portion of it can be found on Emancipation.

Just my 2 cents. cool

If you didn't start a thread on this song, I would have!

However... it doesn't top Adore.

If God one day struck me blind
Your beauty I'd still see
Love is too weak to define
Just what you mean to me.

Think about that for a minute.

THAT RIGHT THERE... is where it's at.

What Prince is saying, is that if the "Almighty". If God. If the CREATOR one day struck him blind, her beauty is SO POWERFUL, that it would DEFY the will of God.

Think about that! Dwell on that notion.

Then Prince goes on to say "Love" is too weak to define, just what you mean to me."

We all know that in Prince's mind, Love is God, and God is love. For him to proclaim that LOVE... or GOD is too weak to define what she means to him... that's just INSANELY PROFOUND! Not even GOD can define his depth... his connection... the power that he feels for her.

Do you hear me? INSANELY profound.

Even 23 years later, people don't understand the depth of Adore. People don't understand it's complexity... but it's revelations such as this which make Adore the greatest ballad of all time!

Not to hate on FLMSW... it's AMAZING... but Adore is the creme de la creme.

Study it! Listen to it. Breathe it. Prince was just divinely inspired when he wrote this piece of art.
