Are you thinking of "The Ball", which later became " eye No" ? I've never heard of an alt version of the title track, although one could exist perhaps.

The original version of 'Lovesexy' recorded with a band line-up in December 1987 was described by Eric Leeds in Uptown's The Vault as being a 'lighter, bouncier' song. Prince kept the lyrics but then produced different music to better suit the words, which he recorded on his own the following month. The description, 'rock-oruented' is not used, and Eric Leeds suggests the second, released version has a more aggressive edge to it. The original recording isn't circulating.

I think eric Leeds said the original recording was more raw in some way, and the final recording had more... aww... I can't remember. But I do know he said that the entire album in general seemed really cool and raw and great until he heard the final mixes with tons of production and added elements and he was disappointed.

One of his greatest overlooked songs.

It would be interesting to hear the first version
Something BIG Is Coming.

I would have loved to have heard a less produced sounding version of the album.
It's one of my major turnoffs of LoveSexy (even I still very much enjoy the album), is how much 'noise' is in it.
Then again, sometimes, Prince is really good with the studio noise stuff. ATWIAD painted all sorts of pictures in my head.

there was mention of a rockier mix of lovesexy from an article back in 88. it may have been femi who mentioned this. he was talking about lovesexy at one of the cellys but he wasn't sure what mixes were released and what weren't, seeing as it was about 15 years earlier. femi wasn't involved in the original recording of lovesexy, he was brought in after the album was finished and got involved in the remixes

That is what i read too.

Eric Leeds said he was very satisfied with the completed studio-sessions by Prince and the band, but that Prince suddenly decided to record all kind of overdubs to the music.

Eric is on record as saying he felt the Lovesexy album was overproduced.
We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

It would be interesting to hear an alternative version of the entire LOVESEXY album just stripped down with a couple of electric guitars, drums, and keyboard.

I disagree, Lovesexy is like a stew. It just has loads of differents elements in it - some you can distinguish, some not..

I like it that way..

Yes, you could take elements out and make it more purist but Lovesexy is essentially Prince and that's what makes it so great.

It's a little bit this, it's a little bit that.. that's what makes it so great. We can't define what it is.

It's not totally raw - yet it's not totally contrived either. It is pure Prince.. Just madness really..
Shut up already, damn.
