That would have been great, but you really need to start a couple of months ahead of time. Find the source(s) that you want people to download from and find the song. Like, is "Another Lonely Christmas" in enough places to actually make an impact? (It's an obvious choice for the holiday of course). Or do we go with an album track like "Adore" or "Housequake" or "I Wish U Heaven"? Someone would really have to do the research on Rhapsody, iTunes, Napster, and whatever other music service is out there which would impact the charts directly (obviously the Digital Top 100 chart or whatever). To just grab the song somewhere would be pointless, but grab it from the right place, and history could be made.

I think the Rage thing is hysterical, and Simon is all bitchy about it. What an idiot, that guy. Fans did the same thing on MTV TRL a few years ago. They mounted a campaign to call in and vote for New Kids on the Block "Hanging Tough" or "The Right Stuff". I forget which one, but they pulled it off, and it was the #1 song on TRL that week. It was brilliant.

Nope - it would now be sad and unoriginal.

Also, what would be the motive? If it was just "Let's get Prince to No 1" then its just gonna fall flat on its face. With Rage vs X-Factor there was a real motivation that struck a chord with people - many were sick of the dominance that X-Factor had established over the Xmas No 1 and so this was a massive reaction to that - people were genuinely motivated to show "the machine" that it wasn't in complete control. Simon Cowell has now had a wakeup call and has admitted himself that he'd started taking things for granted.

So, in order to motivate the kind of support required to get someone to No 1 for Xmas, you're going to need a compelling reason for people to do it - a fan's desire to see his favourite artist at number one is doomed to failure.

I suggested on here that we tried to get Prince a number one for his 50th birthday and there wasn't really that many people interested.

Housequake would be a hysterical Christmas number one.

It will never happen though.

This is a serious question. What is the big deal with being number 1 at Christmas?
Making love and music are the only things worth fighting for.

It's just something of a tradition in the UK.

It's probably more of just a time frame, and easier for folks to remember, opposed to a random date like August 7th or something. Actually I think a better date, and it also gives us plenty of time to plan, is June 7th. Ummm, that was a totally random date. But somehow.....it seems familiar. Hmmmmm.

It could still pulled off.

The reason the RATM campaign worked is because there are hundreds of thousands of people in this country sick to death of X Factor and they knew this would be their best shot at stopping yet another reality TV show Christmas number one.

It really had nothing to do with the band or the song. This campaign has been an absolute blessing for them in terms of exposure and media coverage, but really, it could've been any artist or band that was chosen.

That is why a Prince-related campaign wouldn't work. Why would hundreds of thousands of people download a random Prince song from iTunes? It's just not going to happen.

Why doesn't someone go for Nothing Compares 2 U for UK No. 1 on Sunday 31st January 2010, that would match Sinead O'Connor who did it that week 20 years ago (3rd Feb 1990).

That should give it enough time to get up support. It's available on itunes at least.

Most people I know hate Prince's version. There's no accounting for taste.
