The Rainbow Children sort of lost me. i took a break from prince after i got married and was really out of the loop of what was even going on with him music wise, because i didn't have internet for like 5 years, and i was living in brazil, where i never saw or heard anything about him. when i moved back to the USA and got internet again is when i was back on track. lol

Never had that. I accept that it's his art and he's doing it his way and always have. If I had my choice he'd make nothing but funk music from now until he's 6 feet deep. I've learned not to take it so personal. It's just music.

there are such things as shades of gray. not everything is black or white.

and this site has long outgrown just being a site about prince. the GD forum alone is twice the size of this one. we're kind of a community that was originally brought together because of prince, but has grown together in many, many other ways since.

But losing it for Prince would mean that you are indifferent. You wouldnt care one way or the other.

The fact that you are posting in a Prince forum and your williness to choose a side in various Prince debates means that you must have some fanatical passion.

Thus, you are still a fan. Being a fan isnt about loving or hating, its about devoting time. And if you have gotten this far in reading my post - you are devoting time to Prince.

I dont get people who claim Prince has somehow chosen to express himself in a way they can not appreciate or to say that his first album was of a certain type and his 20th is different therefore he is no longer relevant.

IMHO if something isnt growing, its dead. I remember me at 19 - and today at 38. Today I am a father and a more responsible human being. I have evolved in the way I approach life, relationships and even sex. I am still the same person, but the time has allowed me to gather information. Based on that wider breadth of experience, I have tailored my approach to certain things.

If I were to write about how I perceive things today (vs when I was 19), the way I express that would be from this vantage point.

If Prince was still singing about head, wouldnt we wonder?

.

i am a loooong time poster on this stie (7 years and 41,000 posts) and most of my posts, like many of us old-school orgers, aren't about prince. this site has evolved from a handful of fammies into a community. i have travelled around the country and stayed and partied with orgers. we have had invasions where we all meet up in a city and party/vacation together, and you would be amazed at how little prince is mentioned.

i am still a fan, sort of. again: shades of gray. i am certainly no longer a fammie, as his largely tepid musical output this decade has often bored me, and his often piss-poor behavior towards us fans has really made me lose a lot of my interest in him.

but i am still a fan, though nowdays i am mostly a fan of his pre-2000 stuff.

you might still be a super-fan or a fammie, and more power to you.

unfortunately, after he shut down npgmusicclub, the org has been flooded with fams who are determined to take it over and remake it in the musicclub's image. i really wish lotusflower had forums so the fammies would have somewhere to go where they don't have to endure the sheer misery of hearing someone speak ill of their god and his ridiculous ways, but... meh.

superfamdom isn't why a majority of us are on the org. most of us are here because we've created a community together.

For me there was no particular one "moment". I suppose it happened sometime around the 1990s when I realised that he was following rather than leading. All that stuff where he was trying to be all hip-hop just sounded a little bit embarassing, not to mention that I also thought the rapping itself was dreadful, and sounded like something a couple of Germans would stick on top of a Euro-crap dance track like "Pump up the Jam" or similar in a vain attempt to give it some street cred. I just happened to be listening to "My Name is Prince" on my iPod in the gym last night, and while the song is pretty rocking, when the rapping starts, I just felt like cringing.

Will he ever write another song like "If I Was Your Girlfriend" or "When Doves Cry"? Probably not. When I went to see him in concert last year, was he as good as he ever was - definitely. Do I have the memories of when I used to get up early on the day his new album hit the shops and then rush home and play it back to back for hours on end - forever.

Unfortunately now, I'm not even sure of the names of many of his albums over the last decade, but most geniuses do their best work in their 20s and 30s, so it was only to be expected that he would lapse into mediocrity (although IMHO, Prince's mediocre is better than most artist's work).

Lookig at the issue from the other end of the telescope, IMO, Prince's high water mark was probably 1986 and the Sign 'O the Times album. From there on, with the odd rallying recovery, it all slowly went a bit downhill (although he did continue to produce very, very good music for a good while afterwards).

I still love the guy to death though, God bless his little purple socks. biggrin

My first playthrough of Rave. It was depressing just how far away it was from 'Prince' and I think I physically sank in my chair as I listened to it. There'd been a lot of junk prior to this, we all know the mess of the 1996-1999 period, and this was the final straw, When the music had gone, there wasn't much point in enduring everything else.

I didn't really start enjoying his stuff again till I saw the ONA tour and began to appreciate the TRC material. A brief hiatus, but I no longer expect anything from a new Prince record than more treading water and chart-trend chasing - If I get anything else, it's a bonus.

i remember that album came out the same time as the charlatans latest(totally unrelated) and for the first time i played the shit out of the charlatans"us and us only" and for the FIRST ever time since 84 was utterly non plussed by a P album-i mean normally any other cds i bought in the same week would have been a massive 2nd place but RAVE.....and the shite cover that people sniggered at

that was weird man.....

Well....it was when The Rainbow Children came out. There were some albums that gave me the WTH feeling...but, then after another listen or two all was ok. But, since the Rainbow...I can barely give an album an entire listen before losing interest. There are some good songs here and there....but, that was the album that kicked me to the curb.

That being said: I burned a disc today with some of all-time my favorites...from all over the catalog.

And, I think his attitude and gestures to the people that have given him ALL that he has it just STUPID. Most real "fans" don't steal from who they love...but, he treats everyone like criminals...and that SUCKS.

The funniest thing I have ever seen about Prince is the home video Kevin Smith did...there is an entire segment where he talks about meeting Prince....HILARIOUS!

some people are equating "lost it" with being done with Prince..others have equate it to utter joy with Prince..so the owner of this thread might want to elaborate on what they mean by "losing it"...anyway,I was done with Prince as soon as the Game Boyz showed up..first time the word corny ever came out of my mouth when it came to Prince...

Never really lost it for Prince, However, I was a bit concerned until Musicology and all promos came out and thought he was back on top of his game,

After which, the YouTube stories, cease and desists for fan sites and "Planet Earth" just soht him down again, even with 21 nights of kick ass UK concerts.

For a little girl like me to be able to crush that cd with my bare hand into a ball after one listen was a last straw for me. I had already long let "the new master" thing go, feeling pity for a once great artist, but this dam fucking thing really pissed me off, even after receiving it as a gift from the love of my life at the time.
I hate everything about it, and at the time, after the his awful 90's output, i felt he was completely done.

That was stupid.

I've never been that mad at a CD where I felt the need to break it and throw it in the trash.

Maybe you DO need that Shrink's number, because you obviously have some other emotional issues that need to be worked out!!!

I mean, how DARE Prince make music and put it out for people to hear!!!

You'd probably smash Steven Spielberg's car with a Golf Club if you didn't like one of his movies!!!

I took "lost it" as meaning, I lost all my reserve thinking Prince was going to be like other artists. Once I saw Prince play I 'lost' all preconceived notions that musicians were made from a similar mold.
