Quiet as its kept, you are still Prince fans. there are such things as shades of gray. not everything is black or white. and this site has long outgrown just being a site about prince. the GD forum alone is twice the size of this one. we're kind of a community that was originally brought together because of prince, but has grown together in many, many other ways since. . When I saw the video clip for Cream, I lost it for Prince. In a good way. I've never looked back. He is DA BOMB! Take it - like Clarence said:

It's why I don't want to meet him. I don't want to meet him either. I've had a much grander time getting acquainted with other Prince-related folks. Well...except one. Even Prince said, "Never meet your heroes, they'll always let you down." He jumped the shark on that for me, so there's really no need to meet him. I've seen him in person (Lovesexy Los Angeles baby!), and that was enough for me. But when did I lose it for Prince? He lost me a lot when he stopped cursing. I'm not a filthy mouthed sailor, although I have my moments. It's just that...well, it was part of his music to say "FUCK", and sing about fucking, in a sexy and non-JW way. I was listening to 1999 this evening. I was still mesmerized by "Let's Pretend We're Married". Then as he's singing about "I sincerely want to fuck the taste of your mouth", you still had him saying "I believe God, he's the only way, but you and I know we gotta die someday, you think I'm crazy, you're probably right, but I'm gonna have fun every motherfuckin' night...." THAT was Prince. The Prince now is like a vapid fart of his previously stinky, beefy self.

It's hard to say, he's done a lot of stupid stuff that annoys me to no end. I'll go with the Lotusflow3r site fiasco. 77 bucks a month for a washed up egomaniacal screwball? Bull.

never really lost me fully.....
cuz-i'd always go back as soon as he'd tour-which used to be pretty much all the time-but..... and i know its shallow-his style really put me off starting with D & P. Then the name change-the game boys and tony m.....man he did loose me-until the tour came here. Act II was a great show. Didn't like the D & P shows though-again mainly cuz his look and i hated the album-though i wasn't a GB fan either come to think of it.

When I realised something changed from Lovesexy - Batman, there was too much change happening, for me the people in his camp make a big difference with the music/era/time and the Time, the Revolution, Sheila E. Susan Rogers were all gone and it showed with the output. Even though D&P was a good album it just no longer had the edge he previously had. And the Game Boyz just really removed the icing from the cake

My first playthrough of Rave. It was depressing just how far away it was from 'Prince' and I think I physically sank in my chair as I listened to it. There'd been a lot of junk prior to this, we all know the mess of the 1996-1999 period, and this was the final straw, When the music had gone, there wasn't much point in enduring everything else.
I didn't really start enjoying his stuff again till I saw the ONA tour and began to appreciate the TRC material. A brief hiatus, but I no longer expect anything from a new Prince record than more treading water and chart-trend chasing - If I get anything else, it's a bonus.

The letdown of the Musicology album.
I grew up finding Prince when i was little so I didnt get to go through any stage until the album, but even as a 12 year old I already knew by the time I was 14 that his older 80's music was the best.

Yeah that really put a nasty taste in my mouth. The "cease & desist" letter he filed for this site made me pause. Also his hypocrisy, he didn't put money where his big preaching mouth is when it came to the "free the music" sermon he barked in this past decade,,,,,I understand him for looking out for his intrests, but when you sue a woman for making a video of her daughter dancing to 'Lets go crazy', then you're burning bridges. His beliefs never bothered me though.

The first time I thought "uh oh" was Newpower Soul...it sneaked under my radar and when I saw it I thought it was a bootleg. For years he'd been praising live music/instruments...and then he squatted and shit out this electro drum machine, mass produced turd of an album. It had a big feel if 'can't be bothered to try' about it
With a few exceptions every album and project since then has had that vibe...be it the snatch and grab NPGMC, tbe albums that never materialised, steaming piles of dung like TRC, ONA, The Vault, NEWS etc or albums that have potential but just seem rushed like Planet Earth. Some people are to close to see how much it's gone downhill..take a step back and compare albums and shows like D&P...so much finesse, care, detail and flare...now it's all rushed. What really nailed it was that, when he was at the top of his game, he was arrogant but in a cool way....now he's just a cunt going after fans etc

The first time I thought "Uh oh... this is a bad album", was tadaa... Emancipation. I did not know what to think about it... today I like it, it's a good but still not brilliant album. Prince 4Ever.

True. Then again, looking at the Lotusflow3r.com mess, I kinda miss the "good old NPGMC days". At least they delivered something. You got a bit of music, show announcements, ticket reservation, soundchecks and whatnot. I never would´ve thought he could top the whole Crystal Ball and NPGMC fiasco but hey, nothing is impossible. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! But losing it for Prince would mean that you are indifferent. You wouldnt care one way or the other. The fact that you are posting in a Prince forum and your williness to choose a side in various Prince debates means that you must have some fanatical passion. Thus, you are still a fan. Being a fan isnt about loving or hating, its about devoting time. And if you have gotten this far in reading my post - you are devoting time to Prince. I dont get people who claim Prince has somehow chosen to express himself in a way they can not appreciate or to say that his first album was of a certain type and his 20th is different therefore he is no longer relevant. IMHO if something isnt growing, its dead. I remember me at 19 - and today at 38. Today I am a father and a more responsible human being. I have evolved in the way I approach life, relationships and even sex. I am still the same person, but the time has allowed me to gather information. Based on that wider breadth of experience, I have tailored my approach to certain things. If I were to write about how I perceive things today (vs when I was 19), the way I express that would be from this vantage point. If Prince was still singing about head, wouldnt we wonder? . I would have to say the years following Emancipation. The Music Club, the threatening of fansites--those days. When all of those websites initially shut down, I was stunned. Prince used to enjoy one of the most vibrant online communities ever. The org was one in a huge selection of other sites--most of which are now defunct. Albeit it was the beginning days of Internet popularity (remember Steve Hammer's Prince page, anyone? Despot's Prince message board?, etc. etc.). Even today, the Prince fansites that exist do so with the constant threat of being harrassed by the very man they are promoting. Have you checked the org photo gallary lately? It's terrible. It's a shaddowy reflection of what it used to be. It's simply not even worth visiting. It's terrible. Is this the fault of the moderators and site manager of the org? No... It's Prince's fault. I hate the excuse of Prince apologist who say, "he's only human" or, "it's his perogative". One can ownership of their image and be 'only human' and still reasonable you know. So, my über fanaticism ended around that period of time--ironically just before my prince.org addiction began. It's hard to explain to people but my love of prince.org has fuckall to do with Prince.

I almost feel like this specific album has been discussed before, namely about the drum machine and dry sound of the album. I've kind of noted to folks before in discussion that NewPowerSoul would probably have been a much better album had the band actually played on it. I mean, really PLAYED on it. Fuck Kirk Johnson and his drum programming nonsense. Get behind a kit and play the fucking thing! The songs are mediocre and bland, but get a drum kit going, and some live keyboards, an organ, a piano, etc, and they'd stand out a bit more. A band number playing something like "Until U're In My Arms Again" might not be so bad. We cringe at that song, despite the muse, but think of it as a sweeping number by the band. Imagine some incredible drumming during "Mad Sex", or some funky fills that Prince is known for during "NewPowerSoul", almost changing it to a James Brown type jam. I found it very, very odd that Prince told Mel B. that this NPG album was the craziest he'd done, in terms of feel and mood and party atmosphere, yet it was the driest, most milk-toast, "Eh" type NPG album he'd put out. I think he could have given Exodus a run for its money, had he done it right. Even Emancipation could have had brighter moments with the band, and not the drum machine and the dry production value. Very good point you made though. I'm glad you brought it up.
