I think you got the wrong song there buddy.

'Shy' has space rather than emptiness, something a lot of his best songs have, but if you'd replace it with Interactive or worst yet Rock and Roll..., then I can see why you wouldn't be feeling that.

I don't feel it because it's just lame in comparison to the other great songs on that CD. Simple.

But the most powerful revelation among this grab bag of edgy rhythms and melodies comes during the deceptively gentle "Shy." Its rhythm track recalls the imaginative noodling of "Kiss" leavened with the melodic idiosyncrasies of a Joni Mitchell ballad but leaves a more indelible impression than either. The male protagonist of "Shy" lands alone in Los Angeles and starts wandering the town in search of, well, poetry in motion.

(Rolling Stone review)

I don't care what Rolling Stone says about it. They don't influence my tastes. I'm not easily bought by the Hollywood music machine.

I'm with ernest on this one.

'Shy' is cool, but it's my least favorite song on the whole album.

And I do consider TGE to be a classic. But cutting out 'Shy' and a couple of the interludes and it's flawless.

I would have cut "Gold" off of the album. I actually like "Shy" ok. It's not my favorite by a long shot, but I'll take it over "Gold".

Shy is a non-typical Prince track and that is positive. The oposite is 319 which is a rather bland attempt to make another Kiss.

Or been somewhere on the album, and cut out "Shy". The Gold Experience, which I consider a rock album overall anyway, would have been even moreso a rock album. The number of rock songs would have upped a bit with Endorphin, Shhh, Gold, Interactive, Dolphin. Couple of ballads, and a couple of funk workouts, and you're set. But anyone knows I think Gold is a perfect album anyway (even moreso because I never ripped "Shy" to my harddrive, so when I play the album, I never hear it. It's the only stinker for me. I also tag "Rock N Roll Is Alive" in the mix somewhere too, which should have been on the album as well).

'Shy' is the best thing on there.

Yeah, don't know about the best thing on there, but Shy is great. I think its great in there to even out the album. I think Prince could have done a great double album with gold experience with all the material he had.

I've said that if Chaos & Disorder were whittled down to about 5 or 6 songs, that it could have been a bonus EP, perhaps in a 2-CD single set (like Peach or Somebody's Somebody). Just empty a few songs as a bonus somewhere, or just include the disk as a bonus disk of "outtakes" or something.

For me, the Silver (what else is he going to call it?) EP would be:
1 Chaos and Disorder
2 I Like It There
3 The Same December
4 Zannalee
5 Into the Light/I Will
6 Had U

I'm also not a fan of Shy - but I did hear a nice little (fan mix?) of it the other day - with an added beat (similar to Space), that seemed to lift it into an entirely better song - wierd.

That might be interesting to hear. It needs something for me to consider it again.

I dig them both...but Dreamer is more raw to me; also appears less electronic; Dreamer also seems like it was produced by a more mature Prince as a musician/guitarist

Interactive.

I know, Dreamer should be considered a 'Hendrix hommage', but it just in exciting at all IMO, its sort of drags along, lacks a gripping melody-line and the guitar-work is too much a 'show off' IMO.

Interactive might be 'simpler' and more poppy, but I find it definitely more catchy and enjoyable to listen to. The use of sound-effects ads a nice little touch, and the bass-line is great.

LOL, I think "Shy" is one of the few cringe-worthy songs Prince has ever done.

But that's the beauty of art, huh?

Dreamer sounds like a wanna be Hendrix, not a homage, but a cover version. A cover of a Hendrix track that no one has ever heard. If it was a Hendrix track he would have been criticized for threading old cliched ground.

A bad pastiche which I don't hate.

Wow, I had no idea there was so much love for Interactive. I love both songs but I definitely gotta go wiht Interactive as my fav. I love the line just before the guitar solo: To you, I'm worth no more than the strings on this guitar...

i agree with the whole post except this is the 2nd thread i've heard u mention not liking 'shy.' what gives dude? for me it's one of the standout tracks on that record and features some of prince's tastiest guitar playing ever! just wondering what makes that tune more of a stinker for u then say, 'we march,' or even 'most beautiful girl..' which are the stinkers for me...
i agree with 'rock n roll is alive...' and 'interactive' fitting in there though, they'd really kick that record up in the rock direction. like i said, lose 'we march.' utter crap in my opinion.

ah shit never mind... hadn't read the posts after, u explained why u don't like shy. i gotta start reading ahead, my bad.
i didn't think everyone would jump on the 'shy' comment though, never knew that tune had so many supporters. or that 'we march' had so many haters, deservedly so.

Which song rocks harder???
Interactive or Dreamer
My vote goes to Interactive
Interactive is one of the best and hardest rocking Prince songs ever with AMAZING GUITAR SOLO.
Dreamer is great but not up there with his best rockers.

too bad Prince dont play Interactive live
maybe he forgot the solo? cool

Love em both but Interactive was back when P was still wildin' out. So it has the "edge" on Dreamer, imho.
Peace ... & Stay Funky ...
