I'm so glad I was there in the beginning of Prince's career. I seriously do not understand these new fans, I mean they missed ALL the good stuff, and I do mean ALL. nod

Exactly. I don't know how you'd be a fan of what he's done the last 10-15 yrs.

New fans are important because they will in time learn about Prince's wonderful contribution to music.

What Prince has done in the last ten years is played by me at home just as much as "For You," or "Prince." cool

Well I'm a new fan, and I know of his history (more or less). I'm sure most people aren't that interested in an artist's history though, but I am. biggrin

This is how I feel. Because he talks about love, sex and romance I have looked into his past relationships more than I have any other artist. It's interesting to see the progression. Also albums like Emancipation were neat finds that I would never have seen if I didn't go backwards so to speak.
There came a time when the risk of remaining tight in the bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom. Anais Nin.

Missed all the good stuff? Okay, let's for the sake of conversation say that "all the good stuff" happened from 1982 to 1984.

Through the miracle of CD's/DVD's and bootlegs, newer fans can experience "all the good stuff" for the very first time...right now if they want.

So, what is the good stuff to be missed? Your friends in high school liking Prince? Shit, I was in school when Prince was "flavor of the moment" and my friends still weren't into him.

New fans haven't missed anything. They'll likely do their homework and eventually get hip to every nook and cranny of Prince's past. Actually, it makes me a bit envious of them.

but its not the same as hunting down the bootleg cd's. sitting in your room and pressing a couple of buttons. I remeber going to record fairs and finding all those cd's and thinking which one or two can i afford to buy.

Define Fan(atic) wink

What's a new one? He/she might be more "die hard" and knows more than an old one....

As for me...saw purple rain in '84 and... P scared the hell outta me smile (probably 2 young for his charmed and too naive smile)

Thank God I came to my senses a few years later hahaha:)

Doesn't mean that a younger person is a worse fan just because I had the age to see PR in the cinema or someone was there at P's first concert!!!!

It's not the same, but you are talking about new fans missing something entirely different. You are talking about the loss of an entire era. Hell, I hardly know what a record fair is. Prince fandom isn't worse these days, just different. The record fair is called the internet. All of those albums are still to be found by newbies.

I think that's wrong of you to say, it's not our fault that we were born in the wrong decade, we couldn't decide when we wanted to live.
And also Prince's music is age-less and that's why the new generation find his music interesting and start to like him. If you ask Prince I don't think he appriciates his older fans more than his new ones, he probably likes them equally.

Prince received some airplay here in Italy only in 1984, but I became a true fan only in 1987. I'm pretty jealous of all the people that are discovering him today, because they have some superb music surprises waiting for them. SOTT changed my life, and I'm sure it's an album that can still have a strong impact and appeal to new fans
