The lyrics he changed for the '91 era version (the released version) mainly change the more personal references to Prince's friends/colleagues. It's a shame they were changed.
Suggested targets have been Morris, Vanity, Chic Huntsberry, criticism against Prince's post-Purple Rain music and incorporating Wendy into the band, and some think the 'stuck in the snow' line is about Jam & Lewis, although I'd say that was old news by '85, and that line relates to cocaine abuse. Compare the lyrics here: http://www.dtt-lyrics.com...5.html#old http://www.dtt-lyrics.com...ml#friends

The Vault (book) doesn't say who is on the track, and suggest the liner notes on The Vault (album) are incorrect. The album liner notes say Sheila E. played on the record, but this is disputed.
The track was recorded in April 1985 during the initial Parade sessions, where Wendy & Lisa were often present. Obviously Clare Fisher's orchestra is on the track. Then it was worked on later in 1991 (and possibly later).

The 1991 version is a travesty and a sure sign Prince had lost his mind by that point.

I think I'm one of the few people who like both versions. I absolutely love the full orchestra.

The version from The Vault contract filler album was a re-written version that was turned down by Joe Cocker (he took 5 Women instead). Prince kept the original from Warners, he obviously either felt he'd moved on from that song lyrically or he has plans to one day release it in it's original form as WB don't own it.
Hopefully it could be on Roadhouse Garden or The Dawn or CB II or ----- ----? ... [Edited 12/14/09 14:41pm]

I love the newer version. The old one isn't exactly bad though. RIP
