Montreux DVD and Classic Tours on DVD

So is it gonna happen? When are we going to get a good concert of Prince on DVD and or Blu Ray?

I don't count the Aladdin, it's filming quality is shite.
Rave was okay but for me that period with Larry Graham etc was not his best and that was 10 years ago!

I am all for seeing Lovesexy Dortmund converted from original broadcast/ laserdisc to a slickly made DVD. I know there are fan versions on DVD but I think it deserves to be on the store shelves so the general public could see his greatest concert (IMO)

Same with Prince and the Revolution Live in Syracuse 85. Again classic Purple Rain full concert experience. This needs a re release big time. How can the new generation experience Prince in concert on DVD? This needs to be on the store shelves too. Again I know there are fan made versions circulating but I again talking about what I see when I go to the music DVD section or Blu Ray section looking for Prince. All we get from a 30 year career is Hits/Aladdin and possibly Rave. Probably the 3 DVDs that are least interesting documents.

So that brings us back to the now. We need Prince to release a new concert DVD. I would prefer to see some of the legendary historic shows like I mentioned. Thank god for Sign O The Times the movie. Purple Rain the movie is great but for a different reason, it's not a historical document of a prince classic tour. Especially his big stadium shows. The Parade Tour and Nude tours were also broadcast on TV in editted formats at the time and again these are big stadium shows and as much as I would love to see something new, the old classics are Rock and Roll/Funk Soul/Pop history. I think especially in this age of HD TVs booming and now so affordable to buy a big screen TV that cost in the hundreds rather than the thousands, it just really really is so obvious that the greatest tours are not available in the average record/DVD/Bluray stockists. Even Madonna and Michael Jackson, U2 ad many other major artists that came from the same era as Prince have their main tours available and have updated for DVD.

I want Montreux.
I want a Paris show from 2009 on DVD
I want a major show professionally filmed in HD from the 02 series or from his next world tour.

I want non Prince fans to experience what we know about by seeing in stores on DVD and at least having the choice to see some of those shows. I don't care about Princes new self editting his lyrics, whatever. He just needs to get over that and let people see the historic shows.

Remastered to widescreen where possible, with original and upgraded 5.1 digital sound mixes too if you please.

I have all those old shows and have converted them all to digital files but my main issue is allowing non Prince collectors to be able to view the archives. Make it available, document Princes live concert career legitimately and with respect. Nuff said.

MJ only has one concert on dvd which is the Dangerous:Bucharest Concert. No victory tour or BAD tour concerts. Idk and idc wat Madonna has on dvd.Thank GOD 4 bootlegs. As far as the general public seeing the Prince concerts goes, If they really want to see them,it's not that hard to find in this day and age.

I found the Rave concert just as horrible, if not more horrible, as the Alladin DVD, which was utter crap.
I agree with you that he should finally release something that really reflects his showmanship, or at least re-release some of the official stuff from the 80s on DVD....Lovesexy or Syracuse or even the Undertaker or Detroit 1986 being the first that come to mind.
Rave was also not really a whole live concert in the true sense because it was all arranged and shot over the course of two days, and they pretended to celebrate New Year´s Eve when it was actually shot weeks before New Year´s Eve. And don´t get me started with the cheesy audience shots, the piano scene and the overall corny atmosphere of that show.
Very, very bad, IMO. Didn´t even buy it when I saw a cheap used version at the fleamarket because I still have the shitty VHS somewhere. And Alladin is just crap. It´s still a mystery to me how someone manages to ruin a concert experience by editing the shit out of it. Strange, considering that those who were there that night consider it a great show.It takes some effort to turn a good condert experience into a craptastic official release.

Things are not right when your audience recorded bootleg stuff of the same tour sounds and looks much more fascinating than the officially released legit stuff.
Maybe the folks at Paisley Park should ask the guys at Sabotage for help or advice.

I know but most people I know couldn't do it, they don't have the time! They just want to grab in a store on throw it on their netflix list or whatever they can't invest time into seeking out this stuff! Rememeber most people are not like us orgers. In terms of Jackson, the Bucharest concert is legendary. It gives the whole Jackson live experience and it's on the shelves as is 3 clips compliations that are quite extensive. Madonna has tours her major stadiums shows of at least 3 major tours I can think of and again she's not even a renowned live musician like Prince, she's more of a performer entertainer. I would love to walk into local stores or Amazon and see Prince Purple Rain Live in 85, Lovesexy Live in 88 and Earth Tour Live in London all on DVD for $10 or $15. I know it would go a long way to helping peoe keep those memories alive. Bootlegs are not mainstream dude. Peope don't have the time or energy and why should they watch crap quality when they could be cleaned up and look and sound amazing. I think it would help alot if they released a Prince music clips anthology on DVD at least in cronological order.... The Hits DVD and Diamonds Pearls etc all should be in a package like MJs Number Ones.... Over 2 DVDs..

Agreed that the Purple Rain LIVE and Lovesexy Live VHS's should be released on DVD. Or perhaps Blu-Ray.

Purple Rain live needs to be remastered in sound too. There's just no bass in it, and it's very clangy at times. Too much high end. I'd love it on DVD, but no one is going to take the time to remaster it like that either. I sort of wish a fan would do it and make it better like someone did the SOTT DVD(s).

The Syracuse show to me wasn't the best show to represent the Purple Rain tour. I remember reading a review of this show back in 85" and the critic pretty much said that Prince "talked" his way out of that concert, I will have to agree. I will admit, he did redeem himself with a very extended version of Purple Rain at the end, but I think the Atlanta, Detroit, and Miami dates would be the better Purple Rain shows to have on DVD. I would love to see several shows, rehearsals, and after shows on DVD from 83"to 88". One more thing, I have seen the Lovsexy88 show some time ago on Utube and I would have to say (and this just could be me) Prince was at a "dark" place during this time period. The show was very polished, but Prince's energy during that time period seems "dark", you can feel it as you watch the video.
Peace,

Peace,

I agree. The leaked audios of the Purple Rain tour are so much superior to the Syracuse show. I remember one of the Revolution members who wore hospital scrubs understanding when I mentioned Prince going through these long segues at his shows, where he's talking through 10 minutes of one chord (like when he went into "Do Me Baby"), and did the finger snap thing, etc. If you cut that shit out, the show is about 90 minutes. 30 minutes of bullshit in a 2 hour show, is 25% crap. I almost like half way through a show, Prince loses his umpff to be there. He gets distracted, or bored, or something, and starts noodling around on a piano, or emoting. It's almost like he just forgets what he was going to say, or just has no clue what he should say/do.

Of course I also asked that same Revolution member what it was like to stare at Prince's ass for 15 years.

His energy level performance was like this the second time he came on the Arsenio Hall show I believe this was in 92" the only thing good about that performance was, "The Max" especially the ending. That performance lacked the "high energy" Prince had when he came on Arsenio the first time in 91". Now that was the Prince that we all know and love! biggrin

I have always wondered why they didn't hook up because their quality was just plain better than what the source put out.

That maybe all true and fair as a representation of the PR tour. I think thats a fan being picky though. I would be happy just to see the VHS be officially available on DVD. Syracuse was a major event and televised and it was available for years on VHS and I just want people these days to be able to see a concert from that tour. I highly doubt if Prince would be willing or able to have his old concerts produced now into a new DVD. I doubt if they were filmed with the intention of releasing on DVD 25 years later. At least the Syracuse one has already been home video. In terms of Lovesexy, I thought it was perfect, just like SOTT, but Lovesexy was the perfect balance of light and shade, the show was like an opera where he showed his shadow side, he used his own songs to tell a story of personal growth and enlightenment and self discovery. Then, Anna Stesia he was reborn and the second half of the show was more of a rebirth and it just explodes with energy. I love Lovesexy Dortmund. I still remember that night. I was in Europe that year and my friends and I all sat in on a Friday night in the summer in August and watched it live. It was broadcast across Europe live and the energy and showmanship and journey of that show is one of the reasons I was hooked as a Prince fan big time back then. I have the show on VHS and have coverted it to files and DVD but the rest of the world needs to see it again, I believe. Again and again. It showcases him at his best.
