If you had to introduce a non fan to 3 definitive Prince songs....

What songs would it be and why? They don't have to be the pop ones, but hidden gems that showcase the man and his skills.

My vote goes to

1)Lady Cab Driver. Funky, edgy, and showcases Prince at his pre-Purple Rain peak

2)The War. Mainstream music folks may not realize how great a guitarist he is. The guitar solo on this one is on another planet.

3)And God Created Woman. My all time favorite Prince ballad. Sentimental and timeless.

Definitive? As in songs that "define" Prince. Do these 3 songs do that? Don't get me wrong, I love all 3 of these tunes, but I don't agree that they are definitive. How can a song that is a "hidden gem" be definitive?

When put like that I always believed that 'Crystal Ball' sums up Prince in one song.

The intent is to come up with three songs where you think Prince best showcases his all around talents, whether musically or otherwise. It is meant to be subjective since it would be too easy to go with the obvious choices (such as Purple Rain, Kiss, etc).

It depends on the friend, I'd have to know what particular styles of music they like and base it off that.

My top 3 favorite styles are:

Funk
Jazz
R&B Ballads
Peace ... & Stay Funky ...

Aha! Cool---3 songs that define Prince's all around talents.

Joint to Joint: Prince's dirty funk and ability to change directions in one song.

Dreamer: Prince's rock and a bit social conciousness.

Somewhere Here on Earth: Prince's voice. Showcases his ballad and pop song writing ability with sprinkles of jazz.

These are not definitive Prince songs, but sum him up fairly well.

I think it would depend on the friend, yet with a variety I would probably play a mix...

1. Zannalee
2. Strollin'
3. Crimson&Clover

If I remained friends with this person, they'd hear a lot more than 3 Prince songs anyway. cool

2. Adore (beautifully written and delivered...and oh sooooo shexy)
3. Days of Wild ( Love this track 2 funky)

Everybody wants salvation of the soul

[5. Joy In Repetition]

Not that they were terrifying, those songs w/ the exception of Bambi, for some reason had zero effect on me and did nothing to draw me into Prince.
I guess it just depends what age you are and what you connect to cause..

Three songs that can't be denied huh?

Adore (This song has raw energy,is pure and truthful, sexy and sensual, and at the same time it sounds like it was recorded in a church.)

All The Critics (If u don't feel this song, you should just stop listening to music all together)

Purple Rain Live (any version will do cause they're all different and the guitar is the reason if you need a reason)

When The Lights Go Down (smooth as a strawberry milkshake)

D.M.S.R.(no explanation needed unless u need a set of ears)

Insatiable (I'll show my 1 syllable word, if u'll show your 2 syllable word)

Ooops! I was multiplying. Vanity on the thang...I mean brain.
