My head's been spinning with this quote...
Somebody saying that Prince is great at funk, but doesn't do anything very original in other styles.

Anyone remember seeing that somewhere?

I couldn't disagree more with that statement.

'Purple Rain' for example is not a funk song and is amazing.

'When You Were Mine' isn't original? 'Raspberry Beret'? 'Nothing Compares 2 U'? 'SOTT' 'ICNTTPOYM' 'IIWYG'? 'The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker'? I wouldn't class any of those as funk, but they're all original and innovative.
