Torrent archives of Prince fanzines

If a fanzine is now totally out of business and has no further items for sale it would be pretty much a victimless crime to scan a complete collection into PDF files and bunch them as torrents for online download no?

Was just thinking about this as I downloaded a torrent of an unrelated defunct magazine. Surprised it hasn't happened yet as regards Prince.

It is a victimless crime (so are most downloads of films because, personally, I won't pay £7 to go to the cinema and see some of the crap that's been given to me for free...so they ain't losing my buck).

Trouble is, you put them online, and somebody (probably Prince) is going to go apeshit over copyright,

The fanzines weren't his copyright (10,000 or NPG Magazine would be) and torrent downloading at certain sites is pretty much safely hosted anyway.

but if you've never heard or owned a bootleg Prince track or never posted a prince picture on here etc....then you have the moral highground over me.

Oh, I used to go for bootlegs and I tried to justify it like you are doing now. But I couldn't run from the truth that it is stealing.

Ask yourself this - would you admit in person to the artist, director, etc. that you watch his/her product and do not pay for it?

I'd be interested to acquire them. I don't see the copyright issue, other than from the owners of the magazine themselves. People that own the rights to a picture are the ones who would worry about using their photo, not the person IN it (unless that person owned the rights to the photo.) That's why paparazzi have a job, because the photographer owns the rights to a picture taken, not the subject therein. It's why Madonna's nudies were published without her consent. It's why tabloid magazines and shows have the right to put that stuff out.

Scan them, and share them. I remember getting only one back in 1990. I never subscribed, and I should have. They were very well put together and manufactured.

Uptown's Days Of Wild came with a CD of PDFs with issues 1-40. Plus I have scans of most of Controversy Mag (plus the book), NPG, The Truth, Girl Bros, Dream Nation, Record Collectors, Emancipation etc.

It's not the best torrent site, IMO, but it's pretty good, no ads or spam like SO many of the others.

The 'noid is a good one, but it's f'd up right now.

It's a demon of a site, I think. The redirect things are ridiculous. I SO hunt for a good torrent though.

Here's the thing, and I'm nit sure which country you are from so forgive me if I'm telling you what you already know. In the UK we have stores like CEX, Gamestation, HMV etc that will give you money for your old films and resell them. None of that money goes back into 'the systen' - in theory the sane DVD could be sold a thousand times over and the artist or whoever only gets paid once....but nobody says a thing.

Yeah I'm trying to justify it and don't get me wrong, I don't download myself but I do watch a download if I go to a friends house....but the mire they come up with scare tactics like "you are directly funding terrorism" I think - get the fuck out of here, it wasnt paid for so how can it be funding bin laden and his whacky ideals.

There are far worse thing out there than watching s copy of something I would pay to go and see...and if I like something, like UP, I will fork out and go and see it properly...think of it like a full length trailer.

Seriously, I know it's not right and if you don't pay you shouldn't get...guess I'm 'guilt free' in my head because I just watch now and again what a friend happens to have...blame him smile

I know what you're saying, i buy alot of used cd's from amazon, so the artist gets fuck all from it but why pay £9 for new when i can buy £3 - 4 for second hand, the artist would get the same from me if i were to download it free so what's the problem? the only ones losing are amazon, who gives fuck?

Now, now, now, Udo....don't preach and do your homework. Copyright doesn't last forever. They expire, just like Patents, and possibly even Trademarks. There's a thing called Public Domain which everyone can dip from. No, Prince's work, nor Uptown magazine, isn't quite in the P.D. realm yet, but let's at least keep the facts in check. peace

I don't remember there being anything in the Constitution, The Pledge of Allegiance, or the Bill of Rights about downloading a magazine.

Side note: If the PDFs were made available, they'd be great to put on a Kindle or something. It'd be nice to take them with.

Not if Disney has a say about this. And they do, since they've managed to bribe plenty of politicians so copyright law gets extended again and again.

I know. Remember, Prince is the one who sent the media those floppy disks with his symbol font on it, so he has a twisted sense of entitlement.
