Just Another Sucker... Prince's 1st Great Song? I've been listening to this song a lot lately, and I really dig it. Does anyone think it could've been a hit song had he released it on his own albums?
Prince was just a teenager when he wrote and recorded it with Pepe, but it definitely is an early indicator of his sound and what it would sound like over the years. It's got all those elements that would define his music. The Synthesizer Handclaps Funky Bassline Big Drumbeat Really good rhythm guitar work with a soaring solo You could definitely hear glimpses of what was to come. It sounds like it would kick ass live, too if he ever played it. JERKIN' EVERYTHING IN SIGHT!!!!!

It was the only song on 94 East that I remember sounding ANYTHING like Prince!
Not bad for it's time...

It's not Prince singing. It's Gayle Chapmen on lead vocals Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

I know it's not Prince singing, but it still has his sound. It's the earliest display of what Prince could do as a songwriter, musician, and producer. I could easily hear Just Another Sucker on For You. Like I said earlier, it has all those elements that shaped his sound. JERKIN' EVERYTHING IN SIGHT!!!!!

For You has alot of disco and blues and this song is more of a pop record. Some people think I'm kinda cute

Pepe Willie, husband of Prince's cousin, Shantel, employed Prince for his own recordings. In 1977, Willie formed the band 94 East with Marcy Ingvoldstad and Kristie Lazenberry and was later joined by Andre Cymone and Prince. Prince composed music for Willie's lyrics and played guitar and keyboards in the studio, and contributed songs including "Just Another Sucker." The band recorded an album, Minneapolis Genius – The Historic 1977 Recordings. In 1995, the original recordings with Prince and Cymone were released by Willie as 94 East featuring Prince, Symbolic Beginning.

The vocals are done by the two women in 94 East Marcy Ingvoldstad and Kristie Lazenberry. Gayle Chapman wasn't even in the picture, until Prince's cousin Chaz (Charles) Smith bought her to prince's group, after For You was finished.

Prince didn't write the music for Just Another Sucker, Pepe Willie did.
So if you think that musically it shows any indication of Prince's songwriting skills then you're crediting it to the wrong person! Prince just wrote the lyrics and played guitar, keyboards and drums on it. Andre played the bass. It's funny how people think it's the best track, or profess it to be their favorite, just because they think that Prince wrote it, and dismiss the other 94 East tracks. Would they still have the same opinion if they'd been told that Prince wrote all the tracks and therefore approached the songs equally and unbiased? I think we know the answer to that.

Oh I was so disappointed by this shitty album, "Just Another Sucker" is the only song I like on the album. Prince 4Ever.
