The people at WB thought it was too dark and asked Prince 2 come up with a hit&upbeat song. The result was Batdance. Why couldnt they just have both? was there a 9 song limit back then?

Right, and it's not like "Arms of Orion" was used anywhere or "Lemon Crush" fit in the scheme of the movie.

actually yes i think there was something like a 9 song limit as the LP was still a valid form of music product and could only fit so much music on the actual vinyl ... so even tho there were tapes and cds were rising up there was the element of the LP not being consistant with the other mediums ... i dont know if thats why it was nixed but it may explain the length of most all releases at that time being under 45 minutes or u'd have to go all double vinyl like 1999

Dance With The Devil

Cunning liar, eternal fire
Demon clever, promise 4ever
The curious try and always die

Live in fear, the devil is near
Can U feel his breath? Pray 4 death
The curious try and always die

"U men point those search lights up on the tower right now - move, move!"

Have no Savior, have no faith
Never look 4 Heaven's gate
Devil's children, no love inside
There is a soul, but it has died

Devil's children, no love inside
There is a soul, but it has died
And it cries, and it cries.

CHORUS:
Dance with the devil in the pale moonlight
Put your arms around him and hold him tight
Give up 2 the feeling and don't try 2 fight
He wants your soul and he wants it 2night
Dance with the devil in the pale moonlight
Put your arms around him and hold him tight
Close your eyes 2 love and die

Dance with the devil in the pale moonlight {sampled till end}

"U know, without U I just wouldn't wanna go on"

CHORUS {x2}

Dance with the devil in the pale moonlight
Put your arms around him and hold him tight

"It's as though we were made 4 each other
Beauty and the Beast
Of course if anyone else calls U 'Beast'
I'll rip their lungs out"

Dance with the devil in the pale moonlight
Put your arms around him and hold him tight
"Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!"

yeah the limit was something between 25 and 30 minutes per side and as you got closer to 30 some quality may be sacrificed.

but it was a TIME limit not a song limit...there was often some lost time between songs but that was not much of a factor.

Actually, it was Prince who thought the track was too dark and decided to
replace it, not WB (people always seem to blame WB for these kind of things,
when in reality, 99% of the time it's Prince who makes these choices).
Batdance started life as just a B-Side remix/album promo idea (in a similar
vein to what 2 Whom It May Concern was to the prince album) then Prince
decided to include it on the album and release it as the first single.

200 Balloons was originally intended for the album until it was replaced
by Partyman. Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic was another track intended for the
album, until it too was replaced by Trust. (Samples from the Batman version of
Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic can be heard speeded up in some of the versions
of Batdance).

I am not sure if 'rave' was even inteded to be in the set. "We Got The Power"(aka "Dance With Power,")\ was also mentioned in Batdance as well (it was recorded in 1988 during the LS tour) but i do not think that was part of the line up.

It's common knowledge that it was. It was even synched up to the film at one
point, but it was decided that it didn't work in context so Prince went away
and recorded a new song to replace it.

I just realized though that I put the song replacements the wrong way round
200 Balloons was replaced by Trust, and Rave was replaced by Partyman.

There was also another Batman track that was ditched, the 'Batman Theme'.
(which was actually just a revamped unreleased Madhouse track).

I would like to know which of the songs was actually wrote for the Batman soundtrack. I heard "The Future" was wrote in 1986, "Electric Chair was intended for Rave unto the joy fantastic,"Vicki Waiting was originally called Anna Waiting and was intended for Rave and maybe Trust was intended for Rave also. I also read that before Prince decided to do a album,They only wanted to use two songs- Baby im a star and 1999. And that Michael Jackson was the first choice.

A little story about this tune.
In 2002 during the Celebration, Femi Jiya was asked about his first session with Prince.
He told us then it was for a song "you haven't heard. It was called 'Dance With The Devil" '. He said also he really like the song, 'strange but great' as far as i remember.
At this moment, a lot of eye winks and smiles were shared between the fans...biggrin
No one dares to say Femi, we probably all know the song.

Just a thought and may-be I'm alone with this but does the opening of "Dance With the Devil" remind anyone else of the scores of John Carpenter (he of Halloween, The Thing, Assault on Precinct 13 etc, etc.

Like I say it could just be me! biggrin

I think it was a case of them using Baby I'm A Star during rehearsals on set, which led to them asking Prince for a song. There was some mention of having Prince do one side and Michael the other (Joker & Batman), as far as I remember, but P wanted to do the whole thing, unsurprisingly.

this Michael Jackson talk reminds me of a rumor I heard about the Video of Batdance. Something about how "don't stop dancing" was at one point "Micheal Jackson" and that in a version of the video Prince throws a life-sized Michael Jackson doll into an electric chair.

*I think it was in Prince / George Clinton Rock n Roll Comics Issue #21

It was likely in reference to that tabloid story that Michael was upset with Prince for psychically attacking Bubbles and using mind control on the monkey. Which i'm sure they both thought was hilarious. hence the word 'psyche' on the banana.

Given the recent statement that Micheal was worried that if he slept too much GOD would give the best ideas to Prince, there may have been something to that Bubbles story. lol

A good question!

That would be...

God Is Alive (God Is Love)
The Spiritual World
Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic
Love Is Everywhere
Dance With Power (Dance With Soul)

.
