Prince and John Mellencamp - compare

Ok, so this is leftfield, but:

* Born in '58
* Made their firsr records with unprecedented deals at 19 in '78.
* Had various hits in the first half of the '80s, but really made it big halfway through.
* Prolific.
* Dropped off in the 90s and pretty much disappeared
* JB fans
* Name change from something ccol to something hard to pronounce and recall.
* Mix facile politics with simplistic messages of love and peace alongside sincere and complex simple songs.
* Still hardworking with a strong live following after 50.

Also, each one had a major hit that included no Bass: "Jack & Diane" and "When Doves Cry"...

Isn't John such a fan that he once played Little Red Corvette on a boom box at one of his concerts?

I remember seeing John at the Purple Rain premiere and saying that he really wanted to see it, because he never heard him speak.

John Mellencamp has always had a lot of respect for Prince and calls him a genius every chance he gets.

I remember the Rolling Stone article with John on the cover and he mentioned he asked Prince if he was interested in doing co-lead vocals on Pink Houses and he declined.

He did that in Oklahoma City, if not other places on his tour.

This was early on, right? Anyone got a date? Any other comments on the comparison?

I believe it was after "Little Red Corvette" was released as a single, which was March 19, 1983.
