Getting Bored w/ Prince Longtime lurker here who just needs to vent. I'm starting to get bored with Prince. Don't get me wrong, I actually really liked Lotusflower. It just doesn't see like there is much going on with Prince these days and there are never any surprises.
I used to catch myself checking this site and others (remember the old alt.music.prince?) several times a day knowing things changed in the Prince World on a daily - sometimes hourly - basis. Always news of surprise tour dates going on. News constanly about new music. Appearances on TV. Seems like something was always going on to keep my interest. Now I find myself looking at this site once a week at most. And there is never anything new. It's like he's dropped out of site. No gigs, no appearances, no new music in site. I've been a Prince fan for longer than I want to admit. And seen him more times than I want to admit. Maybe I'm just outgrowing Prince. I don't seem to listen to him that much anymore. Or maybe Prince is growing up and is no longer inspired to keep us on our toes. He used to constantly challenge his fans. Even made it hard on us to be a fan sometimes. Now he seems boring. Predictable. Prince, if you're out there. Shock us! Surprise us! The only other times I've felt this way was the early 90' and then Come and TGE brought me back into the fold and then when Rainbow Children came out of nowwhere. I can feel my interest slipping away again. I thought Lotusflower was the start of a rebirth, but everything's quite again. Maybe all I need is a live show to wake me back up, but it doesn't look like that will happen anytime soon.

I echo your sentiments exactly!! And I would go so far as to say that I am in no hurry to see him live again, even if he performed right near where I live!! I just wouldnt b assed enough to go!!!! The last time I saw him was just over 2 years ago at the 02 in London and even then, if it wasnt for the fact that a freind of mine paid for me(and VIP at that)I think I would have walked out!! It was a total anti-climax for me and I just couldnt get into it!!!!
I used to eat, drink, sleep, breathe and LIVE Prince, but not anymore!!!!!

Prince has indulged his fans a lot with things like what you say, all those random out the blue tour dates, lots of music coming out etc. Normal artists don't do that; it's 1 album every 2-3 years at best, and a set tour.
Though he fucks over his fans sometimes with things like the Lotusflower site and whatever, he's still far more interesting and "connected" with his fan than many other artists. Maybe he just needs a break for a goddamn minute!

Prince's career has slowed down considerably, but that's to be expected at his age.He still releases alot of 'new' music, but it would be nice if he could keep us excited with remasters, concert DVDS and other goodies during those boring periods when he doesn't have a new album to release.

I'm sure he's got some projects in the works. He's quiet right now. Guess taking a break.

Yeah, but he's only been quiet for like, what, a few weeks?
It wasn't that long ago that there were (apparently) spontanious gigs in Paris, appearances on French television....etc Its during these brief lulls that I hope he's in the studio laying down some mastery! ...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...

I think it's a case of Prince setting a ridiculously high bar of constant activity, and us as fans perceiving it as normal.
Most artists on Prince's 'superstar' level take 3+ years between albums. I'm sure we'll hear news, or at least whisperings of a new project before too long. |

LotusFlow3r just came out earlier this year. Prince has been one of a few musicians to release an album every year. I just hope Prince is happy. "The Lion Sleeps Tonight...

Maybe all I need is a live show to wake me back up, but it doesn't look like that will happen anytime soon. I kind of see where you are coming from but to view Prince now, I look at it through the following pov: 1) He's 51 years old The RRHOF was a culmination of all the hard work he has put in. Despite being inducted, he has released 4 albums since 2004 and although not groundbreaking, they have their charms. 2) Has no Corporate Goliaths (e.g Warner Brothers) to fight against I found that once he started to gain greater control of his musical output, he lost a little bit of the fire in him. He railed against WB for those years in the 1990s and with the emergence of the internet, his battles were well publicized for us to follow. The music was sharp and he had the best incarnation of the NPG backing him as well. Without a muse, he seems subdued, so no drama, no "SLAVE" on the side of his face, and no . Give him some time, he'll have us buzzing again. "Old man's gotta be the old man. Fish has got to be the fish."

Most artists on Prince's 'superstar' level take 3+ years between albums. I'm sure we'll hear news, or at least whisperings of a new project before too long. Considering that most of my favorite artists are either dead or release an album once every ten years on average, Prince seems pretty lively and exciting by comparison. It wouldn't hurt, though, if he decided to release more dvds or do something worthwhile with that site of his in between albums/concerts.

I know how you feel MrGoldstruck. I enjoyed the new album as well, but it seems with Lotusflo3er that he just put it out there and that was that. It's nothing new for Prince to get easily bored of his new projects, but it's been a while since he did anything particularly exciting.

I saw him at the o2 as well and sadly I totally know what you're talking about. It was just lacking on so many levels. There was no passion, it was just going through the motions. He would spend exactly an hour and a half on stage (which is pretty much the minimum you can get away with) performing the same tired renditions of the hits from his 2004 Musicology tour, completely ignoring his newer material. Boring boring boring.

I have wanted to see some of the old concert footage, unreleased videos for the longest. I have been listening to him since 1989 and even now when some of the Orgers talk about some of the works from the early to mid 1990s, I am left awe struck wondering when it would be available. Matty-you are right too. If he were to tour in the U.S in 2010, I would love to hear some of the tracks from 3121, Planet Earth, and LotusFlower dominate the set list. Being a fan of Prince is a relationship. You have to stick with the good and the bad, the fun and the boring, for better or for worse.
You know full good and well if a new album was coming out next summer you would be checking this site, checking it twice. ust rest on Prince for now..find some boots to fit your paisley gap...he'll be back. Straight Jacket Funk Affair

Prince lacks charisma and has NO personality. I can't see anything remotely interesting about him. When he speaks, in his dull, deep, boring monotone, nothing to say except espousing his religion and sending us to sleep moaning about radio and record companies.
He'd be a crushing bore at a party, if he hadn't brought his guitar, He'd get asked to leave. It's rubbing off on his music. Dull, Dull, Dull. But apart from that, i'm a fan. [Edited 11/27/09 10:42am]
