I was listening to this the other day and despite the being buried on the Crystal Ball/The Truth, I really think this was one of his better (not the best) ballads of the 1990s. Any one else feeling this?

Yeah - love this song. Great lyrics and some lovely production on the track. A pure and visceral Prince track.

And, I'm sure I remember reading that Carmen Electra did actually send him a used condom as a signal the relationship was over (classy!) - can anyone verify that story?

I wouldn't be surprised about the Carmen story. And if she did, GOOD for her!

Rumor has it that he kept her waiting until 3 and 4 a.m., and that he sometimes said he was coming, and never showed at all. He often showed up without notice, and expected her to be looking 100% on point at all times.

So rediculous. We all know that our man is a little full of himself. It's strange to me that he's done so many women wrong, but then writes so many songs like this as though he's the victim.

But who am I to judge.

In any case... I LOVE this song! This is one of Prince's deepest, and most sincere songs, as far as I'm concerned. His voice sounds like he's totally broken after the condom incident.

It's songs like this that PROVE that Prince is a sheer artist. We can all identify with a song like this, and such a painfully difficult issue.

WOW!

Even the notion of "coming back as one of her tears". Prince doesn't want to cause her hardship or pain, but he INDEED wants to revel in the pain that she feels someday.

Prince captures that love/hate feeling better than anybody I can think of in songs like this and "I Hate You" of course.

One other song that "kinda" does what you're talking about... although the emotion isn't "hate"... is the song "Here".

He sings "I just don't want you here..." but by the end of the song, he's singing "I just want you here..."

I love the fact that that he struggles, but gives in to what he feels.

massive props to you for reminding us of this song. From the first few notes you just know it will be a special track, this is just one of his best tunes ever. Love it I tell ya, love it!

It's hauntingly beautiful and captures the emotion greatly.
