MTV Power, Exposure & Major Record Labels I Have 4 Big Questions for Debate about the Massive Influence and Power Videos have on Music Sales/Airplay :
On average.. how many people who watch MTV/VH1 around the world actually know who owns MTV/VH1 and who decides which videos are aired and rotated? Does anyone think that there are certain artists from specific record labels that are played on VH1/MTVE more? What kind of percentage/cut do the Video Stations get from Hollywood Movie promotional videos and multi-artist cds like (MTV Dance Hits) ? Does anyone think that the whole single operation is too powerful ?

Real Sharp Questions: I think the Average Joe&Marry don't care who owns what.TV Dictates alot of choices especially with Music.it's all Legal&Illegal "PAYOLA".there are the Major Companys that Pimp&Push there Product&will always Bully whomever they want too.everybody makes a deal too please everyone in that Business.but the Music Business is just like Bill Gates they want too have a Monopoly on everything&that is where Funny Money comes into the picture.put it like this: if the Business wants too Blow you Up they will&if they want too White-Ball you or Black Ball you depending on how you see the Business they will? Michael Jackson is the Best Example of this I Know.20 years ago Sony then CBS had MJ everything out&Well Promoted.20 years Later He got Froze out.they will use there Power on anyone, even MJ.On average.. how many people who watch MTV/VH1 around the world actually know who owns MTV/VH1 and who decides which videos are aired and rotated? MTV is a culture unto itself. It doesnt dictate what I listen to. It does its thing, I do mine. Anyone is free to start their own music chanel. Part of the reason MTV is thriving is because it has so little competition. Keep an eye on MuchMusic because I hear they are stepping up.

I'll be honest with you... The last couple of times I went out and got an album was after I heard something good one MTVEurope.
So Viacom makes 24 billion a year and is the high roller that dictates what music we all hear eh? How does this make y'all feel? Mel Karmazin from CBS is the President. Viacom's properties include CBS Television, MTV Networks, BET, Showtime Networks, Infinity, Paramount Pictures & Television, Paramount Parks, UPN, Blockbuster Video, Comedy Central. National Amusements, Inc., a closely held corporation which operates approximately 1,390 motion picture screens in the U.S Infinity is the advertising giant that controls radio broadcasting. Together with 384 million people watching MTV alone around the world. Thats quite a monopoly. I'm wondering if there was some fair competition... would Prince play ball and produce more of his art/vision?

So then its a HIT before its even released...
So if paramount puts out a movie called "shit" "shit" will open in national amusement theaters Blockbuster Shelves the shit and Promotes it on CBS an artist comes along and writes the shitty soundtrack the shitty soundtrack gets airplay through infinity and MTV leads the way promoting the artists shit. How much of a cut does the artist and the label get from this shit compared to how much Viacom makes off it.

Viacom is Evil.
Viacom controls what we see and hear. They control so much of our entertainment. They own CBS (and its subsidiary record companies), UPN, Paramount Studios, Blockbuster Video, cable companies, comic book publishing houses, theme parks, regular publishers, MTV, Nickelodeon, VH1, Showtime, TVLand, half of Comedy Central, TNN, The Movie Channel, FLIX, a third of Sundance (independent? ha!). They're ubiquitous. They're unavoidable. They're powerful. They're evil. And if you think it's bad now, get ready for the flood of mergers and acquisitions that are on their way. We thought it was really really obvious why one company owning so many media outlets is bad. Apparently, though, there's at least one person out there who doesn't think that tremendous media conglomeration is an issue. Viacom is bad because they continuously extend their vertical monopoly in every conceivable way in order to control as much of what you see as possible. Thanks in part to Viacom, a small number of people decide just about everything you see on TV, in the movie theaters, and everywhere else. Viacom cable has 200 channels, but it's all crap -- because there aren't really 200 channels, there are 5. Thanks Viacom.

http://www.cmj.com/articl...p?id=34924 I don't think it will kill the music industry. It will make the label get a smaller cut and therein was my question that nobody could answer. How much of a cut does the label get?

I think if you listened to popular music in the 70-80s you got a great exposure to a wonderful foundation of styles that were built from the ground up.
Today the only way a young'in can experience everything is if you lock her in a room full of dusty of LPs and a record player.

Too late..
Emptv and the 5 Distribitors only care about the teen market..and glam star power. Too bad that they didn't strike a deal with The Companies that make CD burners. Emptv and Malt Liquor Radio only care about selling you overpriced clothes and shoes from questionable sources. Diet sodas.. Awful movies.. Overpriced Sweetshop shoes.. Record execs need to stop allowing attraction to their artists affect their ability to judge true talent and integrity! There is too much "incorporation" in the Music anyway. There seem to be too many positions, professionals, and marketers than artists. [This message was edited Sat Jan 18 18:23:39 PST 2003 by NGSPW7200]

At first I did'nt actually read who reponded to me, but I should've known.. The Pict is my Avatar because its as hilarious and pathetic as your attempt to "getback" at me, Sherlock. Eh? This from a man who lives on this board, but supposedly abhores everything about Prince... Think: Does everyone's Avatar represent who they like? I guess I could use your picture as an example, but its not worth the effort. [This message was edited Sat Jan 18 18:16:10 PST 2003 by NGSPW7200]

Just because I disagree with him about certain things or I'm disappointed in some of the things he does doesn't mean I hate everything about him. Think: Does everyone's Avatar represent who they like?
Yes. I guess I could use your picture as an example, but its not worth the effort.

Mr. Redstone, 79 years old, a wily theater-chain owner and lawyer, took control of Viacom more than 15 years ago and built it into an entertainment goliath through a succession of big deals.
