'S Gonna Be a Beautiful Night?

Is there a story behind why the live version was used on SOTT?

Its always seemed strange to me.

Strange in what way?
It's the live version recorded in Paris with overdubs and the Transmississippi rap added from a phone-in recording if I recall correctly.

Strange purely because it's a live track in the middle of a studio album.

I did a Google search on It's Gonna Be a Beautiful Night and I found out that Sheila E's rap is from an Edward Lear book called The Beaver Book of Funny Rhymes. Does anyone know about this book? I couldn't find it anywhere.

It's the only version. There is no studio version of this composition.

from what i know, prince wanted to combine a live recording in a studio track (somewhat experimental). the original live track was only intrumental (save for some chants and singalong stuff from the audience. the lead vocals were added later in the studio...

Yes it's an Edward Lear poem called 'The Table & The Chair'.

It was recorded over the telephone (as someone pointed out above) whilst Sheila was on tour.

Prince has done that before - Purple Rain was recorded live and that's the title track!

I guess if he likes the way it sounds he'll use the live version.
'I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally. He's with our son now.' Mayte 21st April 2016 = the saddest quote I have ever read! RIP Prince and thanks for everything.

So that's what she said.
I know that wasn't recorded in one take.
whew... that's a mouth full.

Said the Table to the Chair,
'You can hardly be aware,
'How I suffer from the heat,
'And from chilblains on my feet!
'If we took a little walk,
'We might have a little talk!
'Pray let us take the air!'
Said the Table to the Chair.

II
Said the Chair to the table,
'Now you know we are not able!
'How foolishly you talk,
'When you know we cannot walk!'
Said the Table with a sigh,
'It can do no harm to try,
'I've as many legs as you,
'Why can't we walk on two?'

III
So they both went slowly down,
And walked about the town
With a cheerful bumpy sound,
As they toddled round and round.
And everybody cried,
As they hastened to the side,
'See! the Table and the Chair
'Have come out to take the air!'

IV
But in going down an alley,
To a castle in a valley,
They completely lost their way,
And wandered all the day,
Till, to see them safetly back,
They paid a Ducky-quack,
And a Beetle, and a Mouse,
Who took them to their house.

V
Then they whispered to each other,
'O delightful little brother!
'What a lovely walk we've taken!
'Let us dine on Beans and Bacon!'
So the Ducky and the leetle
Browny-Mousy and the Beetle
Dined and danced upon their heads
Till they toddled to their beds.

I think the version in the concert film was better than the one on the album. Shame he didn't use one that’s fast and funky like that one, with 'The A train'

Actually, other tracks from "Purple Rain" were recorded live as well, and then remastered. But the live recording of "Beautiful Night" was only an instrumental jam. All the lead vocals were added, and perhaps even written, at a later date.

So, folks, this makes it a somewhat unique, experimental, and interesting project of his from back in da day...
