Is Timbaland making more of an impact in music than Prince did in 1983/1984?

This is a new topic started in an existing thread. My point of view is that:

A. Timbaland is largely jacking Prince's sound.
B. In 1984 Prince became one of the biggest music superstars ever and a household name. Is Timbaland a household name? Nope.

That said, maybe I am crazy and wrong. What do you all think?

A. I agree with you; but I think Timbaland is doing alot more w/ alot more musicians - which broadens his impact more than Prince ever could when he just did his own music. Timbaland has produced tracks for such a huge chunk of r&b, pop, and hip-hop acts from Nelli to Justin Timberlake to Jay-Z and everything he's done has been a hit regardless of the artist.

B. I do think Timbaland is a household name - depending on which demographic of households you're looking at. Country music lover - maybe not so much. but the mainstream I would say yes - after his brilliant production of JT's last album (albeit it was a prince knock-off).

We have to remember Timbaland is only a producer, yea he's tried putting out lame solo-records but they've flopped and even on those he needs the help of a performer to make the song work. he'll never be a "superstar" in the way Prince was/is just because Timbaland's billiance is not from being in the spotlight (I would argue that's his weak spot) but by his behind-the-scenes engineering of beats.

Of course he seems to be doing a lot, he seems to work with a lot of famous people. Prince mostly seemed to work with artists he made, or wanted control of.

Okay I hear you. Three things:

Has Timbaland ever had a year of domination in music like Prince did in 1984?

How influenced by Prince's sound is Timbaland?

Prince begets Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. Now how far does that purple influence reach?

Why is this being restricted to 1983/1984?
Prince's sound and efforts continue to impact music.
BUT...the answer is NO! NO! HECK NO!

alot of producers jack Princes sound, I dont know many sessions I been in on where producers literally play Prince's music and try to jack it enough to avoid copyright issues, its a shitty practice and shows you how talentless one is and the sad part about it is they think this is OK

Anywho, Prince has had more of an influence than any other artist has had on todays producers, that is a FACT.

None of these producers today will make an impact on music and producers of the future like Prince has.

Princes productions have the quality these copycats lack. Its one thing to jack another persons beat. Its another thing to be inspired by and have a similar sound because you grew up listening to Prince.

I dig Timbalands music and respect the fact that he openly says I AM INSPIRED by Prince instead of silently jacking his sound like many other producers.

to answer your question, HELL NO, Timbaland wouldnt be the producer he is today if it wasnt for Prince. Prince has clearly made more of an impact.

In a different thread, and orger made the comment that Timbaland is more influential in music than Prince has ever been (even in 83/84). I thought that maybe I am living in a fantasyland of denial, and thought it was interesting enough to ask others.....

I like Timba but he only wishes he was as influential as Prince!

He is hardly a household name...case in point yesterday when he performed on the AMAs and I announced Timbaland is on and the group of 20 something girls I was with said "Who?" and when I explained who they all looked away disinterested and talked through his entire performance!
The greatest live performer of our times was is and always will be Prince.

I had never even heard of Timbaland til last week...

And I investigated who this guy was because I couldnt believe what his message was.

Compare this to the worst Prince song you know...

I ain't got no money
I ain't got no car to take you on a date
I can't even buy you flowers
But together we can be the perfect soul mates
Talk to me girl

Baby, it's alright, now you ain't gotta floss for me
If we go there, you can still touch my love, it's free
We can work without the perks, just you and me
Thug it out 'til we get it right

Baby if you strip, you could get a tip
'Cause I like you just the way you are
I'm about to strip and I want it quick
Can you handle me the way I are?

I don't need the cheese or the car keys
Boy I like you just the way you are
And let me see ya strip, you could get a tip
'Cause I like

I ain't got no Visa
I ain't got no Red American Express
We can't go nowhere exotic
It don't matter 'cause I'm the one that loves you best
Talk to me girl

Baby, it's alright, now you ain't gotta floss for me

I don't got a huge ol' house
I rent a room in a house
Listen baby girl
I ain't got a motorboat but I can float ya boat

So listen baby girl
Once you get a dose of D.O.E.
You gon' want some mo'
So listen baby girl
When I make it I want you back
Want you back, yeah

Then again, I doubt anybody will have the influence that Prince had...not because of lack of talent, but because the music industry is sick and dying right now.

I doubt anybody will ever put a dent into music the way Prince has. cool

Off topic, but that is actually a really good song! There are a lot of worse Timbaland songs than that one.

Timbaland isn't a performer, really, so he's more of an unseen influence on music.

Like any successful producer he probably has more influence on music that stars like Taylor Swift, but popular performers who are ALSO producers (like Prince) will have the biggest influence.

Timbaland can only dream of having the impact and success Prince has had.

Prince transcends music and genres, he is a true icon.

If you're not into urban music, you probably couldn't name anything Timbo has been a part of.

Maybe if this thread came out ten years ago when everyone was taking Timbaland's double beats style to R&B production, we could debate the trend.
