Honestly, no I don't. While I believe Prince has always been spiritual, he made the jump to religious when he became a JW. He went from God loves all of us to God loves a chosen few. He used to be inclusive and now, he's exclusive. If some of you want to call that growth, good for you. I see it as him de-evolving.

Well, he was as inclusive as Christianity allows anyways...

Prince, Purple Rain tour 1985: "Don't be confused. There is only one Lord...Jesus."

Yeah but when we "met" him, he was already like that. He didn't seem to follow an organized religion.

Let's not forget he was raised a Seventh Day Adventist, which are sorta/little-bit culty, but nothing as much as JW or Mormons. He had a working knowledge of God for sure, and who Christ is; he's just went from one extreme to the other at this point.

Who is "we"? People first become fans at all different stages of his career. The big cross around his neck seemed to suggest an organized religion to me.

Really? I just don't agree that he has gone from one extreme to the other. Could you elaborate on that a bit? I agree that he is different than, say, 1991. But in 1991 he was a different Prince than 1986. And so on, and so forth...

Prince's music has been spiritual all along. lol lol Maybe the words are a little "louder" now.

Exactly.

No. It's fucked him up, he's lost 80% of his funky mojo, and he fancies himself a preacher now. He used to be a leader for the opposite of the norm. Now he's a conformist. That's not evolving, that's giving in.

I think he began to change a bit around the time of emancipation. Not so much of what he now calls "potty mouth". Honestly ernestsewell do you really think that Prince is conforming to anyone or anything in 2009? I think the whole "I am a witness for Jehovah" thing was pretty much over by 2006 the latest. The lyrics clearly show that he doesn't think what they think. I think he has moved further and further away from their beliefs and will be releaved when they finally disfellowship his ass.
Things that they believe that he seems not to;

Men should not wear earings.
(he wears him on the tip of his ears)
Witnessing is more important then money, the hours that you work should not get in the way of your witnessing.
(Do you really think that Prince keeps his hours in the studio down so that he can be driven in a limo around to do "field service"? )

Fornication includes mutual masturbation and oral sex.
(Elixer anyone, it's a duet sung with a woman he spends an awful lot of time with)

They are strongly against bragging
( now this is funny. Mr Goodnight, the Other, and the new one about "never be another like me" were all at least sung after he became a witness)
Materialism is wrong
(If prince isn't materialistic, and openly so, I don't know who is. )

As I have stated before; Prince can't conform to anything for shit, even when he tries (and I honestly think he did try for a while with the JW's) Ernest, he is just waiting for them to kick his ass out. Believe me once he gets the heeve-ho he won't be trying to get back in,

lol lol True, true. Prince only conforms to Prince. Like you said, he does attempt to conform to his "latest fashion".

Amen. Not only that, but when he sang about "God" it was "his" God and that God didn't seem to care if you were Black or White or Puerto Rican, Male or Female. Vulgar or not. Unfortunately, it seems like Prince's "Jehovah" does.
• Did you first think Prince was gay? •

Wendy: He’s a girl, for sure, but he’s not gay. He looked at me like a gay woman would look at another woman. Lisa: Totally. He’s like a fancy lesbian.

I'm listening right now to some of Prince's "Rainbow Children" music off his ONA live album, and I think that his quest for spirituality has led him into some interesting musical territory, whether one believes in his faith or not. Don't you think this spiritual quest has made his music grow and expand? I think so, after being away from it for so many years... I really love what I am hearing... If a spiritual quest makes him do this quality of music, then I say go for it... But if and when he becomes disillusioned with the JWs, I hope P keeps up the spiritual influence in his music...it has always been there! wink

In 1990 Prince had these lyrics about "his" God. A bit confrontational and separating, yes?

"...Heaven is keeping score..."

"...He's lookin' 4 soldiers with strong feet
That can dance on whoever can't say His name

God is alive, this is not a game.."
"New Power slide...."

I found Lotusflow3r to be one of his least spiritual albums yet. There was not alot of reference to God and I didn't find even one to Jesus. The Baptism song was very new age IMO. Controversy and Lovesexy deal with his beliefs about God, Jesus and life after death more than his latest release.

I stick to my theory that he is really juat a JW in name and very halfheartedly. He doesn't want to be the one to officially leave. I just do not see him taking huge stacks of "Awake" and the "Watchtower" to pass out on his own time. This is another question that I'd ask Mani. I think even by 2006 he was looking for loophole in the JW rules and regulations. She could clarify if he takes it seriously at all anymore.
There came a time when the risk of remaining tight in the bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom. Anais Nin.
