Could Prince do a "Number Ones" compilation?

I know Janet just released her Number Ones. If Prince did one, would this be the tracklist?

1. Let's Go Crazy (#1 pop)
2. When Doves Cry (#1 pop)
3. Cream (#1 pop)
4. Batdance (#1 pop)
5. Kiss (#1 pop)
6. Diamonds and Pearls (#1 r&b)
7. Thieves In The Temple (#1 r&b)
8. Sign O' The Times (#1 r&b)
9. Gett Off (#1 dance)
10. Erotic City (#1 dance as b-side)

Anything else?

If he approaches it like Janet did, and picks #1's from dance, R&B, and foreign charts, then sure. But it's been a while since anywhere cared enough to make a Prince song #1. Cuz you know, after all, the charts are evil, and are part of the trick of time, and has something to do with having only one birthday, or whatever. rolleyes

Not sure if he could gather more than 15 songs that way either.

Was "Purple Rain" not a #1 anywhere?

hmmm. or the FACT that charts are dominated by an incredibly narrow list of songs that are fed to the masses via radio, if you don't fit a cetain 'type' you will NOT get played. Simple and factually correct, if P released Kiss or SOTT today as singles do you think he'd get airplay?, he's too old, now if Black Sweat was the new song from JT it would be a smash.

I think all the hits collections he's done have covered all the bases. The ultimate package was excellent and likewise the Hits/B-Sides 3 CD set can be picked up for a bargain.

I hope not.

If I was a huge Michael Jackson fan. I'd be pissed at the way the same songs have been released over and over again.

He doesn't really have the #1 hits for a compilation like that.

A lot of his most popular songs weren't #1s

I Wanna Be Your Lover
Controversy
Do Me Baby
Let's Work
1999
Little Red Corvette

He didn't wanna do Hits and rightfully so. Hate these compilations, especially the absolutely stupid "number ones" crap, talk about just being in it for chart success! We all know he doesn't believe in the statistic way of thinking.

Love em or hate em, compilations sell well. That's why so many people release them.

Maybe he's saving the "number ones" for when he doesn't want to record anymore. lol

Charts don't matter anymore, charts are fixed, charts are controlled by a small group of corporations, MTV, the recording industry, sprite etc. everything is a big infomercial. If Prince wanted a #1 song he will have to go and kiss somebody's ass.

Entertainers like Janet Jackson support the monopoly that keep popular music away of been healthy, honest and pure. Good for her.

Then whose ass did he have to kiss, by releasing an independent 3-disk album through one retailer, and still managed to hit #2 on the charts that week (some argue #1 in other charts)?

With our luck, he'd include "Better With Time" on the compilation.

Another Greatest Hits complimation, do we really need it. Besides he hasn't had a number one hit on any important chart since 1994.

I know, but what about Canada, Germany, France, Australia or any of these bigger markets around the world?

Because Janet's compilation has a song that reached #1 in South Africa!

I think he'd be much better releasing genre albums. He could release his usual album a year, and then 6 months later release Prince: the blues experience (or Rock, jazz, acoustic, love, whatever)

He picks the best 5 album tracks that fit the genre, picks 5 hits that do the same (he could even re record these to fit the genre better as long as he doesn't f*** it up like 1999), and then 5 new tracks.

New listeners are happy as they've got a new album with 5 hits they already know.

Prince is happy cos Warner bros will not get royalties on the re-recordings.

Prince fans... Well, we'll bitch and moan like usual but at least we'll have 10 extra new recordings a year.

And I think they'd do well on the chart. Even get some airplay...

Erik.

Such a compilation would gather the exact same interest that 'The Very Best Of Prince' did for me. I wouldn't buy it.
