One of my favourite Prince songs.
If U R going 2 demonstrate Prince's "Rock Opera" side, this is the cut 2 do it with. Pure Prince (regardless of the Queen comparison), and absolutely brilliant, both musically and lyrically. That's all 4 now... "He's a musician's musician..."

Also, the thought of that song being done in one take is mind blowing... even with overdubs. "He's a musician's musician..."

Totally agree. I can't see where there'd be many overdubs, but just the idea of timing, precious, etc, as a band, to pull off that song is downright amazing.

Wait, why was the other thread locked? It was about the COMIC BOOK, and this one is about the SONG. Two completely different things, two completely different discussions.
Back on topic, I've always liked this song. It's not as amazing as "Bohemian Rhapsody," but it works for me as the Prince equivalent, and the guitar work is spectacular in places. I think the fact that it's so polarizing among the fanbase shows that it has something going for it. Prince's more "out there" experiments like this one may not always be perfect, but at least they're interesting.

"U say U'll call me and then U don't 'll want 2 kiss U and then won't We both do nothing and call it love Is this love? Is this love? Simply beautiful and the falsetto is perfection! Couldn't agree more, it's one of the most sublime moments of his career! The composition of that bit is amazing too! 3 Chains O' Gold If I don't think about the fact that she left me If I don't see the pearls fall from the sky If I don't hear the accusations of blasphemy If I don't feel the tears in my eyes This is the best day of my life U say u'll call me and then and then u don't I'll want 2 kiss u and then I won't We both do nothing and call it love Is this love? Is this love? This morning I wanted a cup of coffee But I didn't have any cream Last night I wanted some inspiration But I didn't have any dreams Coupled with the fact that u belong 2 another Whose name is self-righteousness So evil girl, if one of us has a date with the undertaker, which one will it be? U can cry 4 ever, but u'll get no sympathy This is the best day of my life I've got 3 chains o' gold And they will shine 4 ever They are the nucleus of my soul Melt down, no, they will never I've got 3 chains o' gold And they will shine 4 ever They are the nucleus of my soul Melt down, no, they will never Give back the chains - if you don't you will die Nothing should come between you and I I've got 3 chains o' gold And they will shine 4 ever If one of us has 2 go U will go before me If one of us has 2 go (3 chains o' gold) U will go before me (3 chains o' gold) u will go before me, baby (they will shine 4 ever) cuz I sho 'nuff say u will (3 chains o' gold) (u will go before me) (u will go before me) (u will go before me) (u will go before me) I've got 3 chains o' gold They gonna shine... Forever, forever, forever (3 chains o' gold) I'll die in your arms under the cherry moon...

Almost as bad as Des'ree, "I don't want to see a ghost/It's the sight that I fear most/I'd rather have a piece of toast/Watch the evening news" Good tune though... [Edited 11/27/09 4:09am]

[Edited 11/27/09 4:09am] Hmmm, but I've always felt that those lyrics are deliberately uninspired, contrived to be, because it reflects what he is singing about - in other words, here's a fairly lazy line due to the lack of inspiration....in itself and inspired way to write Those Des'ree lyrics, however, are just shite!! An attempt to appear existentialist and whimsical. [Edited 11/27/09 4:21am] ...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...

[Edited 11/27/09 4:21am] [/quote] So you're saying, that poor lyrics by prince are intentionally so, which is itself inspired? and poor lyrics by another artist are just poor. i think you are over defending, what are essentially, the lyrics of a school child's calibre. Perhaps I missing something but the lyrics to this tune seem to have no thread at all, they just chop and change form one thing to another, as does the music for that matter. It just so happens I prefer the music to the lyrics in this case. The whole undertaker section of this tune I think is contrived and trying to hard to be operatic, the side of prince I wish he really wouldn't push on us, as per the whole karma sutra nonsense. ugh!

No, I'm not generalising - I'm taking both the specific lyrics you quoted and analysing them IN CONTEXT of the song they come from - not generalising that Prince can never write a crap lyric, or that its always defensible when he does. What I am doing is providing the justification for it here, in Prince's case - it might be intentional or not, that's the beauty of interpreting art! So, no, not over-defending, just providing a specific answer to a specific question. Again, the whole "chop and change" aspect of the track, both lyrically and in musical style is just typical of the very genre he is attempting (the dramatic rock-opera style a la Queen and various musicals and stage productions) - its not my favourite style either, but that doesn't stop me appreciating the brilliance that is contained within those tracks. As an aside, I really can't stand "Strays of the World", but there are still elements of it that make it interesting on the rare occasions I hear it! While a very unique song on a very complex 3 cd set, i would place it as one of the weaker songs on the set. Not really sure what he was aiming at here either.
I do not compare this in the least to queen. If I wanted to give an album of his a tracing homage to anything slightly queen, it would be LoveSexy. and mostly the song AnnaStasia (did I spell it wrong?) I usually shy back from those songs where Prince tries to make himself sound big, bad and untouchable. This is not the Prince I relate to. I like the Prince that shares his vulnerabilities in his music, the Prince who seems to try to reach for that perfect peace with life, and like us all finds that invisible things are hard to find. This was my draw to 3121. It was a man sharing himself and having fun. Sometimes Prince takes himself a little too seriously, and he is not very good at pulling that off without making it very cringe worthy. We are all so full of here
