Gold, yay or nay? Is the song a stone cold classic or an overrated piece of shit? I for one thing this is one of his top songs. Simple keyboard line, great vocals, interesting lyrics, great fadeout. A real building classic, with that Stairway to Heaven jive that makes anthems stick.
The song is just amazing. When P still had it. All you others say Hell Yea!!

this song sounds like something off a Disney soundtrack

I rarely play it. Its overrated as its a typical Prince good/great quality release. Coming in th eera of Chaos and Come makes it seem all the mover great imo. Cause shit like Dolphin, Endorphine Machine, Now, and We March sounds uninspired or by the numbers to me.
EDIT: I thought you meant the album not the song. The song is trying to be the 90's Purple Rain to me. Its a good song but overbaked to me. Grade B to B+ [Edited 11/17/09 16:58pm]

Yay.
I JUST finished listening to this album like 20 minutes ago. I wasn't bored once, and actually looked forward to the last track as it approached.

The song is just amazing. When P still had it. The Gold Experience was the last album of Prince's that I bought in the 90s. I recently decided to listen to his music again and when I listened to that album again every song was as energizing and as memorable as I remembered, with the exception of the "Dolphin" song! I am now catching up on Prince music I've never heard, and I am pleased with a lot of the stuff (not all of it) that I am now listening to... But the Gold Experience is a must for any fan's collection!

I think it's truly underated. I think it should have gotten as much attention as Purple Rain. I wish he would drop Purple Rain and start playing this.

Gotta say, I really love his new (for me) jazz/funk direction--I think it is great that he has expanded his musical horizons!

Like the song; LOVE The Gold Experience

I dig it but not as much as Purple Rain or even The Love We Make. I've never heard the unreleased version that's supposedly more raw. I think that would help?

For me, the song didn't live up to the hype.
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

WOW, is all I can say! Where did you get hold of this letter? That is what I am wondering (while I sit here and fume at my X for leaving me with a Sony 5 disc changer that worked for a year until I put what was for me new Prince CDs that I have been waiting to hear--Thnx Ira!). Let me know what your source is! Thnx 4 Real!

Much prefer! Can't listen to Gold all the way through - I only really like Shy. The title track is a good stab at an anthem but is too cheesy. I'd enjoy it live though if he ever dusts it off.

I think the text may have been posted on NPG's website at one point - someone with a better memory than mine could probably substantiate that. I LOVE Gold and the whole album, he does seem to have lost something and his output was better when there was quality control, now he'll release whatever he wants which is ok but back in 94/95/96 he was angry and i liked him better then. For me TGE was the last exceptional album definately a 9/10. would've liked Days Of Wild on there but that cut didn't work in the studio, way better live and is glad Interactive didn't make although Aknowledge Me would've been good.

Prince was quite adamant at the time that Gold was even better than Purple Rain, wasn't he?
It's clearly not - less emotional connection, a bit cheesy and definitely TOO LONG. That said, I'm so sick of PR, I'd gladly hear him resurrect this live. "Had to get off the boat so I could walk on water..."

I prefer all trax on lotus bar 4ever to Gold, for sure. and i think the albums are on par with each other, MAY lean towards Lotus a tad more thanx to classics like colonized mind, $, FB, FG, FW, Boom, Dreamer, Wall Of Berlin, Love Like Jazz, 77 Beverly Park, and the more experimental trax like From/Back 2 the lotus.... I prefer the Lotus album compared to Gold, although Shy is an all time favourite. I like the Gold track too. It's not his deepest, but it's got a kind of collective sound to it, as if it involves everyone, whereas some songs have more of an individual lonely sound. I'll give it an 8. It's a happy sounding song and those are sometimes nice, even if they sound a bit more "poppy" than others. All that glitters ain't gold is not exactly a happy lyric but still the song comes over to me as happy. A kind of resignation to peace. Gold is a alright song on a alright (but a bit overrated among fans imo) album. I believe that sex is a beautiful thing between two people. Between five, it's fantastic.

Turned out to be an ironic comment on the song/album itself.

As many threads have stated before the original intention of this album and Come was to release Come as Prince and Gold as on the same day putting the better more commercial sounding material on Gold but Warners didn't like that idea so yes it will sound commercial, that was it's intent, but overall the lyrics are a big fuck you to WB. To me the content of Gold (song) seemed to be that as good as these big contracts are it ain't that good as he was in dispute at the time. overall i think he was grateful to WB for the oportunity but outgrew them in turnover of music in the end.

I think that a false dichotomy has been set up asking if it is a stone cold classic or an overrated piece of shit. I think Gold is a good song, middle of the road. I play it every couple of weeks, but there are at least 5 songs on the album that I like better. I abdicated the throne in Ithaca, but now I am...
