Sympathy 4 The Devil - Talk someone into listening to a Prince song they would otherwise never listen to again Right, that's the idea, save a song. Think of a Prince song you really, really dislike and see if it can be redeemed by the power of the typed word alone.
Convince someone to listen to listen to their audio nightmare again. feel free to write a bit about the song and why it bothers you so much. I'll start with the obvious, 'Jughead'. This song apart from the obvious horrible rapping, marks a watershed moment in Prince history, he was following rather than leading, really for the very first time. The whole thing is awful, i have no idea if it's supposed to be serious or comedic (it's neither) when he performed it on the D&P tour his section was a cheesey lip-synched VT of him in his dressing room, i thinked this is the song he simulated bum-sex with the Game Boyz, the music is a shambolic retread of 'Housequake' with all the funk drained out, Tony M (had to mention him) the crap ending, the 'comedy' slap. Urrrgh. No way i'll listen to it again, unless there is a piece of genius within i've missed! if so, TELL ME! [Edited 12/7/09 9:57am] | |

Long gone were the days of drum machines fed through guitar pedals. Long gone were the days of his force as a one man band. Long gone were the days of benchmark songs like "DMSR", "Computer Blue", "When Does Cry", "Kiss", "Forever In My Life", "Adore", etc etc etc etc. Bring on the days of rapping, following the clanky, echoey, dated sounding production of the early-mid 90's. He got back to being THAT Prince in the mid 90's, when he was at his second peak of being prolific, trend setting, unique, awesome, etc. I've said it before and I'll say it again: It's when Prince is in battle with someone or something (WB) that he has created his best music. In the mid 80's when he was shuffling girlfriends, and having conflicts w/ them that he created gems like "The Beautiful Ones", "Strange Relationship", "When Doves Cry". It was the mid 90's that he created masterpieces like The Gold Experience, Exodus, and Come. When he got free from the WB, and got wild and loose again, his music suffered greatly. No way the 00's can fairly be compared to the 80's or the 90's. The trend was broken by the time New Power Soul came out. | |

Whilst I'm inclined to agree with this, it is funny now we're nearing the end of the 00's, fans are all of a sudden becoming nostalgic about the 90s. I remember being a member of Prince.org in the nineties and nobody had a good word to say about a Prince record post-Lovesexy... [Edited 12/7/09 10:38am] | |

Symbol has a handful of great tracks, namely Sweet Baby, Damn U and The Morning Papers. 3 Chains O Gold is also something of a guilty pleasure of mine. I also love the sound of the NPG around that time - I think that was Prince's tightest band line-up. Batman, GB and D&P are a mess though. [Edited 12/7/09 10:57am] | |
