Interview from 1998?

Hey folks,

Can someone refresh my peabrain as to the interview Prince had back in the New power soul era, where he's with the NPG and has that goofy haircut and is in a bit of an over confident mood?

I think there were some pretty cool clips included aswell (in terms of back catalogue etcetc)
Thanks in advance cool

strange irony in the interviewer trying to get them to a religious meeting...

...by 1999 he was a card carrying JW!

Could it be the interview he did with Kevin Greening?
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

That was an interesting programme...It was funny when Kevin asked what he should call out to Prince (not Prince then) if a pot a paint was destined to fall on the purple one's head! Prince smirked...& then made for the exit.

yup, he killed himself because prince walked out on the interview cuz kevin asked him how to pronounce his name (when he was named after a symbol that smelled like a fart)

I think it was backstage at Wembley Arena (or Brxton) and he cracked this awful joke about Radio...and then had to explain that Larry Graham had a hit with a song called Radio because nobody had heard of it.

Oh how times have changed - he made a jibe about how if he wanted to listen to a machine (making music) then he'd put some washing on, listen to the washing machine whilst making real music....just over 10yrs later and he's bleeping and pinging along just the same.

Time flies...can't believe it's been 20yrs plus since Diamonds and Pearls yet the 15ish Yeats between Purple Rain and D&P seemed lime an eternity

at was backstage at brixton academy on 28th august 1998. the day after the cafe de paris gig thats in the beautiful strange video. brixton was the first gig i was onstage with prince at. the video for the opening track jam of the year was on npgmc a few years ago

i was speaking to larry and jerry martini, cynthia robinson etc at cafe de paris the day before whilst prince was soundchecking, and the next day i was onstage with them. i got my own back on prince stagediving on me both of the two nights before at hippodrome and cafe de paris. he invades my audience space, so i invade his stage!

1998 on BBC, I think the interviewer called New Power Soul "substandard", and Prince replied "is that a substandard shirt you have on"... something like that.

I don't think he said substandard but Prince used tge ol' shirt thong to illustrate tbe differences in opinion...it was something to do with popularity or success.

Wow - I don't remember the chap being so blunt to him, he didn't say NPS was substandard did he....although he'd be right on the money if he did, beginning of the end is more accurate

Im paraphrasing here but it went something like this,

KG: so who lets you know when your work is substandard?
P.(screwing face up):substandard?
P: Is that a substandard shirt your wearing? Is it my place to say that?
KG: Well I like it
P: right! you like it

I emailed Kevin Greening a few years ago to ask him if he could shed some light on the build up to the interview.I was going to post the interview and then his comments..kind of like a wee org feature..
I got this response from him...

"Hi Paul
Thanks for the email - which I've only just seen after several weeks workingaway from London. I've got a huge backlog of correspondence at the moment butI promise to get round to sending you a properly considered reply as soon as Ican. Cheers kevin "

I still have it in my hotmail..he never ever got back to me though and he has since died.

Ah yes - I remember now!!! Clearly Kevin was on to something there as somebody needed to tell him NPS was substandard
