What's really stupid is how people jump on my ass for saying something they don't like, as if I said something about their mothers. I don't mind arguing about shit, but damn, have a valid point. I think Prince's new stuff sucks dick, but I have no problem with anyone else liking it. Some people need to chill the fuck out.
There you go, you get it and seem quite willing to debate without getting offended. Say it loud and say it proud if that's how you feel about his current music. You won't hear a peep out of me. However, We ALL have biases and I think it's quite healthy to be called on them from time to time. -- [This message was edited Sun Jan 12 2:34:50 PST 2003 by Brendan]

Great opinion...but I still feel its more personal than about his music, so the critics rant and rave about him being so bizarre and far gone to he needs to wear purple and play kiss over and over again and get the revolution back!
These are prince best music making years since the 86-88 period with madhouse and prince's music has always been great, of course there are songs or perhaps an album that wasn't as good in quality...but its his own personal statement and I respect that, but when a certain magazine picks each album he releases and completely over looks the packaging, artwork, quality of music and his musicianship and maturity in his image as prince...and completely goes back to 1984- thats not cool!!! Give me a break! Vibe and Rolling Stone SUCK ASS, AND THATS MY REVIEW ON BOTH OF THOSE MAGAZINES. Prince deserves a fair chance w/ them and why is it other artist can remake a prince song now a days and get great exposure and when prince steps in to release great music like "The One" "Greatest Romance" "Somebody's somebody" and "Come On"...its not acceptable, but yet he's so great! LOL Oh yeah- only if he gets back into that kitty lace and purple high heels at 44. Thats stupid...its all personal and when critics start to critique the music, then I will shut up!

Natasha, you're a very strange chick. You keep going on and on about how discrimination upsets you, yet you say you wouldn't hang out with people who don't like Prince. Aren't you then discriminating against that person for their beliefs and opinions? You're the one who's being prejudiced.
And what the fuck is all this black man/black woman shit? If someone doesn't like a person of the same race, why is it a big deal? What, all black people are supposed to be in harmony with each other? It's human nature do dislike and to like. What difference does race make? Hey, are you also pissed when white women say bad things about white men? I doubt it. And this: "and all the bad stuff saying they want a White Man" And you hate racism? That's funny. Why is it bad to want a white man? (Oh sorry, since you wanna be PC, let's be fair, a European American). Love is love no matter what the race. It seems you're just an angry black woman. Relax a little. I always believed that it's everyones God given right to hate whoever they choose. If you wanna hate, then hate. But don't try to come off as being anti discrimination when you discriminate yourself. "You need people like me so you can point your fuckin' fingers and say, "That's the bad guy." "

I wonder why most of you can't just accept another person's opinion. He doesn't like an album, so he's an asshole, or he doesn't know what he's talking about. What the fuck is that? Well if you wanna run that logic, then you're all assholes if there's any one album you don't like. A critics job is to tell the world how he/she feels about something. You act like Prince himself is gonna see your defending comments and personally call and thank you.
People, hear me now! Get off the Purple cock! Do you call a reviewer a guy who writes that onal is not good because there not enough hits on it? Or that his band sucks? uh?!!! Yes most of them are assholes. There are in fact very few good journalists in the world.

Natasha, you have every right to have preferences, it's all good. My only thing with you is the fact that you got so deep on the issue of hating discrimination, but you just seem to display so much of your own in your post.
P.S. If your experiences with white men have not been romantic enough, maybe you've just been with the wrong ones. You gotta play the field babe, give the world a good reach around. "You need people like me so you can point your fuckin' fingers and say, "That's the bad guy." "

Vincent, whether you care for a particular critic or not is your issue, but it is his or her job to tell how they feel about stuff. It doesn't matter what the reason for the oninion is, it's what they feel like saying. If I was the reviewer, I'd give it a low rating too. I don't hate everything Prince does, but I think most of it is crap. That's my opinion and I have the right to it. DEFINITELY gotta disagree with this one...lol A critic's job--and responsibility--is NOT just to simply give their opinion...the publication which pays these critics owe it to their readers to show why they value that critic's opinion enough to both pay them for it and publish it...and in turn, the critic owes it to both the publication and the readers to give well thought-out reasons behind their opinions, so that the readers know what the thinking is behind reaching the conclusions they reached...There's a HUGE difference between saying "ONA Live is horrible because the playing is uninspired and the new tunes lack cohesion", and saying "ONA Live is horrible because there's no hits on it"... Since I feel strongly about him I could Never be with a Prince Basher. Ever! And a Fan pretending to be all into Him but I see their true colors and all and I can tell you better take a walk cause I can smell Phony a Mile Away .
But not everyone likes prince's music, people have different tastes. You wouldn't be friends wiith someone if they didn't like prince? I have friends that aren't crazy about prince, and we get along just fine. Why should everyone have to like prince's music? What you hate someone may love, everyone's entitled to like what they want to like. Now unless they're calling him gay or something like that I don't see why you would get so upset.

As far as I'm concerned, there is a simple bottom line to all of this that has not been pointed out which is that the general "joe average" music consumer (for lack of better) cares nothing about what any music critic, no matter how literate or respected, thinks about an album or artist. I'd challenge anyone to find me an album that sold more copies after a so-called "well-informed" and "knowledgalble" critic wrote something positive about it as a direct result of the action.
You couldn't do it, and the fact that you couldn't has little to do with one's inability to accurately assess that type of scenario. It's just that no one that I've ever met (or probably will ever meet) considers the opinion of anyone other than themselves (and occasionally their friends) before purchasing a piece of art. It's not that people don't read reviews of music (or films). Many people, including myself, do so regularly, and I personally, have even done so before purchasing an album or seeing a film. But it has never swayed my decision to purchase or not to purchase. And thankfully not, for I would've missed out on some great work. Therefore, the point regarding people who favor the work of a certain artist becoming annoyed when reading a poor review of an artist is a fairly moot one. For those who favor the artist are likely to jump to his/her defense when any poor assessment of their work is offered or implied. That's not ass-kissing; it's obsessive, perhaps, but all of us are guilty of that to one extent or another. If a critic's opinions of Prince ever truly effected anyone, it should be Prince himself; and furthermore, if those opinions had made any profound impact on him, he probably would have quit years ago, as I can recall few artists other than he, who are as widely loved while simultaneously as heavily criticized... ...well, maybe Steely Dan...and they've released...what, 8 albums in 30 years?! -SWANG'sdonerambliing [This message was edited Sun Jan 12 21:46:51 PST 2003 by SWANG]

[This message was edited Sun Jan 12 21:46:51 PST 2003 by SWANG] I've bought a couple of cd's after reading reviews of them: one was Meshell Ndegéocello's debut Plantation Lullabies, the other was Neil Young's Freedom. It was about a year after Meshell's album was released that I bought it, so it was a cumulative effect of an entire year of seeing great review after great review. I was skeptical because I had lost confidence in my generation of musicians. Best album of that year, if you ask me. It was a year and a half before I took the darn thing out of my car cd changer, it knocked me out so much. When I bought Neil's album it was because at that time I owned nothing by him, yet I had always liked some of his work. It's another one I don't regret buying because of reviews. That was either in 1989 or 1990. Two of the best albums I own. In general I'm more of a word of mouth person (if I decide on ANYONE else's opinion beside my own), I like to hear what serious music fans think before I decide on listening to and/or just buying a cd. I distinguish the serious music fans from casual music fans, because they're more passionate about music. Once I heard someone in line in front of me ask the clerk about a cd they had read about in a magazine. The clerk said that a lot people had been in the store asking about this cd (that I can't remember the name of right now), and said that they said they had all read this specific review before asking about it. So...actually I partly agree with you. I don't think there is a large percentage of music buyers that base their buying habits on a critic's review, but there is a very, VERY small percentage who will take the chance to at least listening to it in a store because of a review or reviews, whereas they otherwise might not.
