I prefer the Lotus album compared to Gold, although Shy is an all time favourite. I like the Gold track too. It's not his deepest, but it's got a kind of collective sound to it, as if it involves everyone, whereas some songs have more of an individual lonely sound. I'll give it an 8. It's a happy sounding song and those are sometimes nice, even if they sound a bit more "poppy" than others. All that glitters ain't gold is not exactly a happy lyric but still the song comes over to me as happy. A kind of resignation to peace.

Turned out to be an ironic comment on the song/album itself.

Very true. I think because of the climax of the fight w/ WB, that mid-90's work (Chaos, Gold, Exodus, Come) ended up being very ignored.

I've always said Chaos should have been a bonus EP (with a few songs deleted on it of course) to Gold, and Gold should have been his last real recording for WB. It was a perfect ending to his term w/ WB, especially the song "Gold" being the last song on it. Others see "Had U" as the perfect ending to his WB term, but "Gold" seems to be the great ending, for me. That whole album really speaks to his WB time. Songs like "Now", "Dolphin", "Billy Jack Bitch", and "Gold" address WB and his critics, alike.

Maybe that's why I don't like those ones.

I am a hardcore fan of The Gold Experience. Absolutely GREAT Album! As far as "Gold"..my only complaint is that the guitar solo at the end was too short. He should have really dragged that out a bit longer.
The song built more and more after each chorus. If you listen carefully, youll hear more sound and music being added. Then the end "One, two, ONE, TWO, THREE, FOUR!" The sound of that guitar is incredible!
Ive said this a hundred times...Warner Bros dropped the ball in a big way on that one. Yea, I understand their argument, but how did they not hear a hit album worthy of being released?
In my opinion, it was prince's Purple Rain. My 2nd favorite album of all time.

I've long said The Gold Experience was the Purple Rain of the 90's. It's perfect for any casual Top 40 Prince fan that loved "When Doves Cry" or "Purple Rain", or "Kiss", and knows little else. The albums are very similar in layout, style, diversity, appeal, etc.

Just a side note on the "Purple Rain" comparisons, I remembered that "Gold" and "Purple Rain" are in the same key.

Damn it, I had to go cue up this song and listen. I played it about 5 times, with my headphones turned WAY up. I love the strings in the 3rd verse. It gives another level of energy, and almost an urgency, to the song. It helps build to the blistering solo that comes up a couple of minutes later.

He really should do this song in concert. FREQUENTLY. Ain't nothin' wrong w/ a good thing.

Yay, absolutely. I share ernest's standpoint regarding this album and it's title track. Essential and Prince's best work of the 90's.

I think it's truly underated. I think it should have gotten as much attention as Purple Rain. I wish he would drop Purple Rain and start playing this.

Gotta say, I really love his new (for me) jazz/funk direction--I think it is great that he has expanded his musical horizons!biggrin

He hasn't really. He expanded his horizons with Large Room with No Light and solidified it with When the Lights Go Down and Rainbow Children. This latest ventures into jazz are just lazy and uninspired, even for Prince.

Oh yeah, LOVE GOLD! biggrin

Gold is nice if you just wanna have fun
but the truth is its overproduced and lyrics are cheesy and bland.

there is much better raw unreleased version circulation on the internet

Love the album but not the arrangments of the song. I once heard earlier or demo versions (don't know exactly) and they sounded a lot fresher and less cheezy. he should have used one of those.

I've always loved "Gold". I remember reading for nearly 2 years about all this great new material, and getting to hear very little of it. My anticipation for the title track was off-the-charts. It may not have been as good as I'd hoped.

To cast my vote on the larger debate: I think The Gold Experience is likely the last truly essential Prince album.

I use to really love it with Dolphin off that album, but its a bit overdone sounding now. The bside on the single "Rock and Roll is alive and its lives in Minneapolis" is quite good 2. A B grade song here.
