8 Mile, the new Purple Rain?

I've seen the trailers for 8 mile and to me it looks almost exactly the same story as Purple Rain but with rap?

Is this the case?

That was exactly my thought too, when I saw the 8Mile-trailer. I think it is a "Purple Rain" for the rap-generation.

Good 4 rap fans then. I read in a magazine last year and someone working on it said it was like a modern day Purple Rain. Better place as any to get movie inspiration from.

I saw "8 Mile" and I believe that the story was probably better then the story in Purple Rain (was there a story in Purple Rain?), but obviously I didn't like the music scenes as much. But I tell you I am not a fan of Eminem, but I thought he was mesmerizing onscreen.

But yeah I think there can be a strong comparison made between 8 mile and Purple Rain.

Anything I have ever heard from Eminem sounded like trash to me. I don't even know how you could compare Prince and Eminem.

I just saw that movie last night, and I also heard from somewhere (probably someone else on here) that the people making the film were aiming for a rap-based Purple Rain thing.

I'm not a big rap fan, but I enjoyed some of the singles Eminem has had over the last 4 years or however long, and I like listening to hip-hop stuff once in awhile. If you strongly dislike rap, or Eminem, then that will make this movie a lot more difficult to watch. Personally I enjoyed it.

Comparing it to Purple Rain, there is certainly more of a believable plot in 8 mile, and the rap scenes feel like they fit in. Purple Rain seems more like a bunch of excellent concert footage that is chopped up to allow for a loose plot and Morris & company's comedy bits.

Music-wise, Purple Rain has some great performances of what has become classic Prince material. The rap scenes in 8 Mile are, well, rap scenes. The focus isn't on melody, or instrumental technique, but on the rapping and rhyming. Basically every scene is a "battle" between two guys on stage, each having equal time to try to dis the other through their rap. On one hand most of the battle scenes carry a negative energy since each guy is just trying to put down the other, but it was also pretty cool to hear the stuff they came up with. Sure, it was all written out ahead of time and not actually improvised (though maybe some was?), but they pull it off very well.

There are other similarities. Both movies have hot babes trying to get started in their respective career interests while also getting some lovin' from the lead man. Duels between competing bands/rap groups that carry on throughout the movie. Difficult home situations.

Overall, I think 8 Mile is a good movie, not really outstanding, but impressive for a guy who is not an actor.

But Prince is a Musical Genius and Eminem although very Popular just isn't in Prince's League. How can the magazines put him on top or ahead of Prince? That's ridiculous. I'm glad if he is a Prince fan,but the day he creates music like Prince will be when he can be compared side by side to him. I guess sometimes Real Musicians just don't get Noticed or Played anymore and only what is Saleable to the Teenagers!

Yes, but - music excluded - the main difference between them is that "8 Mile" is a much better film.

I don't think the press are comparing Eminem to Prince musically, but in terms of acting talent. I think Eminem beats Prince hands down there.

Saw "8 Mile" yesterday. It lies somewhere between "Purple Rain" and "Rocky" smile That said, it's not bad and Eminem is surprisingly good in it. That said, I love hiphop and I like Em's stuff. Not sure if people who feel differently would enjoy it...

That all said, "8 Mile" is far superior as a movie compared to "Purple Rain". The characters are better, and so is the dialogue. Given the choice between Prince preening and pouting in lacy ruffles, and Em's character "Rabbit" it is obvious which one kids will relate to the most.

I felt though that they didn't do a great job of showing off Em's great wit and rapping skills, and the background music used wasn't have as good as some of the stuff on his albums. Missed opportunity perhaps.

The quote in blue font comes from Jane's Addiction, am I correct?

Can't remember which song, though.

I believe that Jane's Addiction may have covered the song, but the quote originally comes from The Rolling Stones song "Sympathy for the Devil"
