Would you call Prince a hypocrite for this...

im not gonna call lil' skipper names
but remember when he said he didnt want to get a record deal until he could have creative control
but most of his female protégées didn't really want it..or have the talent or ability for it
and i wouldn't really wanna work with people who didn't have enough respect to have it
plus during purple rain and plenty of people who have worked for him have claimed him to be a control freak, wanting more than just control over their music, but their image

it seemed at the start of his career,he hated people like that...i don't know though
im just asking this question to see what you think

No, he isn't.

While Prince has stated that he believes artists should control their product, he has also acknowledged that, for some (those just starting out, for example), record companies can fill a "necessary evil" role.

He has also admitted that he would not be where he is today without Warner Brothers taking a chance on a young unknown from the hinterlands of Minnesota.
We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

After coming back to Prince (his music) after being away for really about 15 years, I have to say I find that his music has changed a lot and that probably means he has changed. But, having grown older (if not wiser) in the meantime, I think that Prince is like most of us who have grown older--resolved on some issues and still confused on others... I like the changes in his music that I hear. I can't speak to his life, since I don't know him and probably never will, but I will say that most people find life complicated, including Prince, and if you look deep enough, we have all been hypocritical on one issue or another; what matters is, if you recognize that and try to do something to change it! If not, you just keep on repeating the same hypocrisy and self-defeating patterns over and over again. Does Prince do this? I don't know! I just like his music! biggrin

theres no argue that first timers might like a bit of help
or he wouldnt be where he is today without WB
what im saying is his alleged control freak nature where he forcibly wants to take control of other peoples work might make him a hypocrite

It's all about ownership, for him. He may help others, but I'm relatively sure he has said they own their masters in such cases.

Of course, a lot of the work on their albums is his work, too - which means he owns it, as well. There's the rub.

I'm sure we've all done hypocritcal things in our life. Maybe you can give some clear cut examples of who has said what, about Prince wanting to control their music and image, otherwise it's difficult to comment.

Generally though, if someone is making music with Prince or participating in his bands etc, it's true that he has a certain type of image and if those people are an extension of his music/band, then they should fall in line with a particular type of image. He is the master of it after all.

I'm not saying he can't be a control freak. I'm sure there are certain areas of his life where he has this problem. But I wouldn't really look at the symptoms ie. peoples' stories and experiences to judge him for being that. I'd rather wonder why and where it stems from. To me it's pretty clear why he could be considered a control freak, but whether that's right or wrong, I think one has to be in someone's shoes before they pass such judgment. It's just to easy to make a sweeping statement from the sideline.

I can't speak for anyone that has worked with Prince. I believe that Prince has always had a plan...something to share that needed a road that he paved. I believe that is a Man making what he needs of his life. Prince is the Lead and therefore the Leader of the Band. cool

pretty much everything he has ever said is recorded somewhere and is delivered up over and over again who amongst us would not appear a hypocrite at some point if we had everything we ever said recorded and redelivered over and over again. I aint in a position to judge we are all hypocrites at some point in our lives.
