Hilarious review of the 1st Purple Rain love scene the IFC did a countdown of the 50 Worst Sex Scenes in Cinema History, and PR came in at #23. Here's the review:
23. Purple Rain (1984) According to director Albert Magnoli's audio commentary on the "Purple Rain" DVD, the love scene between frills-fond pop superstar Prince and leading lady Apollonia was shot in G, PG and R-rated versions, the last of which was ultimately used for the film. More preferable, however, would have been to ditch the scene altogether, as it radiates all the heat of sticking one's groin in the freezer. Lasting just over one tortuous minute, this get-together is primarily notable for featuring Prince -- decked out in the same puffy shirt Jerry Seinfeld would later mock on his sitcom -- stroking Apollonia through her panties, grabbing her bustier-encased breasts, and, after erotically rubbing his face in her long hair, giving her open-mouthed kisses with the type of unnatural deliberateness usually reserved for Cinemax soft-core. If Prince seems mechanical carrying out such staged sensuality, Apollonia is downright wooden, "enjoying" her rock star beau's groping with an absolute minimum of expression save for the unintentionally amusing moment in which her tightly closed eyes suddenly open in a look of sleepy surprise. Mercifully, a fade to blue sky (and dreadful morning-after chit-chat) spares the world the further embarrassment of having to watch these two unsexy, overdressed robots actually bump and grind. --Nick Schager [Edited 11/12/09 19:32pm] [Edited 11/13/09 17:45pm] "Get up off that grey line"

I like that scene. Petting can be sexy. Though, they cut out the hand sniffing part. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

That scene was very sexy, sometimes a little can go a long way with the imagination!

I wonder what they would say about the other love scene that deleted.

I liked the scene and thought it was hot. I've never seen this deleted love scene in the barn. I bet it's also hot.

I remember when purple rain would show up on tv, that scene was either edited out or it would be censored by blurring apollonia's crotch
At least there is a semi-preview of the barn scene during the when doves cry segment What i wanna know does that so-called "rape scene" exist

"Mercifully, a fade to blue sky (and dreadful morning-after chit-chat) spares the world the further embarrassment of having to watch these two unsexy, overdressed robots actually bump and grind." --Nick Schager Yeah, Prince was a little overdressed. I woulda been took somethin off.. Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

Then again, it would have caused controversy so who knows. [Edited 11/13/09 1:20am]

Funny, I never felt this short scene was mechanical and unsensual at all. It's uber-erotic.

Nick is prob a wanker who is just used to internet porn and blow up dolls, that scene was sensual and very expressive of the scene associated with Prince's music... It had my dad, my uncle and me squirming in our seats when we saw it, my dad didn't know if he should cover my eyes or keep his woody covered

I bought Purple Rain a couple of months ago and watched it for the very first time. I just didn't like the film, except for the music parts and Morris Day. And like the writer I found nothing erotic about that scene.
Prince and Appolonia didn't look like they were enjoying doing it at all. But I know other people think it's a masterpiece so I gave the DVD way. I'm planning to buy Cherry Moon, maybe I will like this one more. If not, someone is gonna get a gift again, it's almost christmas

I don't think Prince is capable of doing a love scene that seems totally natural. We all know his movie kisses are... unusual. He probably (hopefully) thinks too much..
