Adore is supposed to be inspired by Luthor Vandross (& female singer?) ballads, so maybe someone could dig up what Prince 'ripped off' for Adore?

.....

Never heard about this, would be interesting to listen to the Vandross track. Does anybody know which song it is?

There was also a rumor going round that "Question Of U" has been lifted from an old 50's tune. But i guess it was just that, a rumor...

I can see where one MIGHT hear a similarity but I don't hear this one. To me the beat in MG's song is so basic that it could be similar to many other songs.
Not that No more candy's beat or chord progression is complex at all but if we compare the amount of musical notes available and the amount of songs produced since the beginning of time, well there are bound to be similarities in quite a few places.

Its not a complete rip-off, but the way Prince handles that beat and especially the bass-line sure sounds suspicious.

Efan has a point there: Dreamer is a straight down jimmi hendrix rip-off, Dance 4 me isnt very original, the bridge on Planet Earth is a rip off.

In the past Prince did use elements from Sly, Jimmi, James and the Beatles without 'exactly' copying them, but nowadays it seems he is taking it easy, and going for blatant stealing

Definitely hear the similarities between MG & Zapp "I can make you dance" also.
Comparison to other artists will be inevitable, especially since a lot of orgers have vast musical knowledge too.

eek some of these "dead people" were around during Prince's formative musical years. Didn't he teach himself music by listening to songs & then playing them?

NO ONE creates from a void.... we all take pieces of memories to create... even Prince. I would guess he has tons of tunes mixing in his mind all the time.

Just an aside...maybe the "Dance 4 Me" muse (real or imagined) is a "Masochistic Beauty" too?

No he doesn't! Dreamer is an homage to Jimi, not a rip - there is a MASSIVE difference! You know, it is possible to tastefully nod to the past without "stealing" from it.

Its completely ignorant to accuse one of the most original and prolific composers of our generation of simply stealing from other tunes. Prince has always been about fusion of styles and sounds and incorporating what has been before in to something new and distinctly Prince sounding - accusations of ripping off other artists are actually just laziness on the part of the listener to properly appreciate hoe Prince utilises a wide musical palette and a myriad influences.

I played Lotusflow3r to an amazing guitarist friend of mine recently - for him, the most stunning thing was the amount of influences he heard in the album. What he thought was incredible is that you'll often hear an artist wear one or two of their influences on their sleeve whilst, with Prince, he could hear 20!

Anyway - please provide actual examples as to how Prince is stealing these days instead of just displaying influences and explain your reasoning.

Last week it sounded just like " I can make you dance" by Zapp. You guys need to make up your mind.

When did I say that? That's right...I didn't. So what does that have to do with what I did say?

-----
I did not say you said it. It was posted on this board. Please remove head from ass now.

Handcuffs

They are some similarities but I could think of a thousand tracks that sounds similar 2 prince songs. does that mean the 1000 trax r ripped of prince?

Love stone by timberlake is similar 2 lady cab driver does that mean timberland/timberlake stole from prine.
Thriller has a similar bass line 2 rick james give it 2 me baby.
It's music it's what u do with it. Inspiration.

Now i think i know - this old MG song is/was the "blueprint" to Princes "Dance 4 Me"!

Half the stuff performed by other artists on the radio since 1984 sounds way too "Princely" and to everyone theyre hits. When Prince gets inspired by other artists hes called a thief. (By his own fans no doubt) How Sad!
[Edited 11/25/09 17:35pm]
Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

Jamie Starr is a thief! Not Prince! lol

No seriously, as i have posted before:

IT WAS A MISTAKE TO MAKE USE OF THE WORD "RIP-OFF" WHEN STARTING THIS THREAD!

MY APPOLOGIES! blackeye

But then again, I still think P was "inspired" by Marvins song in one way or another... The bassline you know, it's the bass line.... boxed

That's dumb. Where Marvin is at, he understands what sex is about and it is NOT all about 'sex.' Get over that aspect, there's lots more to learn for All of Us cool
