Okay i dont know if this has been mentioned before, but i was just sitting at home listening to Marvin Gayes "Dream Of A Lifetime" album from 1985.
When the song "Masochistic Beauty" came on, i was immediately thinking: Hmmm, where do i know this beat from?

Now i think i know - this old MG song is/was the "blueprint" to Princes "Dance 4 Me"!

Or is something wrong with my ears?
Please check it out and tell me if you hear it as well... confused

Marvin's song is definitely Prince inspired, with a kick-ass George Clinton bridge no less. I'd never hear it before and I thought I knew most of Marvin's music, so thanks for pointing it out. To my ears 'Dance For Me' is a bit too slick to take seriously so I don't care if he stole it or not. The final result was mostly lame.

There are similarities - but the question was "is it a rip-off?"....the answer to which is a resolute "NO"!!!

How many times are people gonna bring this up? Do you have any idea how many songs use the same chord progression? Use the same rhythm? Same melody? Countless!

I mean, this is the equivalent of accusing every other car manufacturer of ripping off Ford because their car has 4 wheels too!! nuts

You're probably right, i shouldnt have used the word "rip-off" in the thread title! But I'm still thinking that this is more than just a simple coincidence!

Someone mentioned that "Masochistic Beauty" would be Prince inspired - the whole "Dream Of a Lifetime" album is imho very Princey nod

The album was released posthumous and contains the last real MG tracks. Check it out, it's really worth it. cool

and yeah I never took Dance4Me for a super serious song...and Prince is too old to come with brilliantly original jams now. But does look like this was his main inspiration (that someone justed posted above):

I am hearing the Marvin Gaye song for the first time today This song, Masochistic Beauty was just as explicit as some of Prince's early stuff. i.e. Dirty Mind, Extralovable etc. check it out for yourselves if you havent heard it before.

http://www.youtube.com/wa...Lmm0u52k2c

That was Marvin's plan for the album. He wanted "Sanctified Lady" to be called "Sanctified Pussy".

Yup, and at the very end of the song, at fade out, he says "sanctified pussy" instead.

The bass line in "Masochistic Beauty" was very common back in the day. There were a bunch of jams with bass lines far more similar.

The bass line in "Dance 4 Me" is nowhere near a "rip off", as stated. Just sayin'.

Just 2 provide an example of what I'm sayin... This was a classic from 1980:

this sounds like early prince - soft and wet for example (the keyboards).

I think is more like marvin gey ripping off the prince and old rap at the time sound and prince later ripping off himself.

This song is marvin trying to be hip in 1985. prince used that sound 1978

Yeah, they're pretty much the same musically.

WTF was up with Marvin's English accent? All I know of him are his hits, but this doesn't sound anything like the guy that sang "What's Goin' On?"

Prob'ly a combination of mutual influences. Interesting the way they all merge.

Ughh...must I quote Tom Petty again?

Some have claimed that the Red Hot Chili Peppers single "Dani California", released in May 2006, is very similar to Petty's Mary Jane's Last Dance.[25] Petty told Rolling Stone, "I seriously doubt that there is any negative intent there. And a lot of rock 'n' roll songs sound alike. Ask Chuck Berry. The Strokes took 'American Girl' [for their song 'Last Nite'], and I saw an interview with them where they actually admitted it. That made me laugh out loud. I was like, 'OK, good for you' ... If someone took my song note for note and stole it maliciously, then maybe [I'd sue]. But I don't believe in lawsuits much. I think there are enough frivolous lawsuits in this country without people fighting over pop songs."

Prince has been stealing a lot lately. Stealing riffs for Planet Earth, taking from Jimi Hendrix on Dreamer, stealing from his own fans for his pathetic website, now this...

Larry must've glossed over that whole "Thou shalt not steal" part.

I can think of another song by Marvin, that might have inspired Prince.

"Til Tomorrow" and "Insatiable", have very similar melodies...

Adore is supposed to be inspired by Luthor Vandross (& female singer?) ballads, so maybe someone could dig up what Prince 'ripped off' for Adore?

You've heard that "white horse" track that Erotic City sounds like.

Purple Rain/Purple Haze

Cream also has an influence track (T-Rex?)

There's not many truly original P songs, I think Sign 'o' The Times (song) is very original sounding, although it continues where What's Going On left off.

Maybe When Doves Cry is the truly original one!
