sign o the times film

i watched this again the other day to see if the film might have grown on me as i've never really liked it. when the film starts we hear this fantastic guitar playing but when we see prince he appears to be playing a kids plastic toy guitar , the picture doesn't match the sound ,i think prince is the best live artist ever but i find this film ludicrous how could they get it so wrong ?.

Wow, how rare... a fan who doesn't like the SOTT film eek

it's true the film and sound are not 100% synchronized. Maybe becuz the film was re-shot at Paisley Park,

still.. the film is an amazing monument, a highlight in Prince's career.

Have you ever hear of Capitol letters? Maybe you should go back to school and stop worrying about Prince's work.

Maybe you should go back to school and learn the difference between "capitol" and "capital." biggrin

It's an odd film in a lot of ways, but I love the energy in the performances, even if they are lipsynched. (And I love the performances of all involved...God, I love that band...)

I have no idea why he wouldn't do a real live performance for a concert film. I know there's an explanation for why he did it...but that explanation never made any sense to me.

Then again, it never made sense why Cat would shout "Fuck off!" to a simple request for a date. Or why Prince would want to marry someone that bitchy. That's some messed up affairs of the heart.

I never saw any film other than PR which I actually viewed again recently for reminders. But I don't think Prince is good in movies. He's a musician not an actor. The music in the movie though is spot on. I wish Prince would do more soundtracks. The Batman one was proof of what he's capable of. But let others do the acting.

From what I understood most of this film is live but in spots there were inserts that were filmed at PaISLEY Park. I assume moments like when P asked Cat for a date and she tells him to fuck off. I think SOT is an awesome film and to all new fans I always use it as reference material. Especially the Canadian remastered DVD. This needs to be on Blu-ray.

How can U not like this movie? I don't get that.

Sure, some bits are 'not' live... but heck, look at the performance overall... I love the version of Forever in my Life! eek awesome shit! The only problem I have with it, is the Quality of the audio/film... (I have the Canadian version but hell, that ain't perfect either!) Watched Queen's ROCK Montreal last night on Blu Ray... eek really beautiful!

The guitar playing in the beginning? You mean just before the actual concert starts? That was the beginning of the concerts. I remember a huge curtain (Madhouse written on it. just before prince would start, smoke came out from behind. then the solo strated and together with the compu drums from SOTT the curtain fell down. Man wat a way to start a concert... headbang

Pretty much, the whole show was re-shot at Paisley Park, because the footage shot in Europe was too dark and the audio didn't have enough stereo separation IIRC,
I think the only European footage that actually ended up being used was the video from two songs and even they were heavily overdubbed with all new audio back at PP.

For someone so opposed to lip-syncing - this is a travesty.

I never hear that before, to dub a concert film is a crazy idea, actually goes against of what a concert films should be.

Any film need some fixing like dubbing, sound efects, foleys etc. (even Scorsese concert films), but still I don't belive P re-shot the whole show. Do you have more info?

I thought it was common knowledge.. Basically the entire show was re-created on the soundstage back at Paisley when he returned from Europe.

All true...I have a collection of takes from the Sign film shoot, and I was kinda bummed when I watched them. Kinda like pulling back Oz's curtain to reveal the little white nerdy dude.

And...how 'bout another podcast, fellas?!

sigh... Why do "fans" insist on posting nonsense? 99% of this movie is NOT live, all filmed on a PP soundstage. This has been well documented.

Except that it wasn't. 99% was filmed on a PP soundstage. Original film was completely unusable. Which isn't a surprise since they had way to little time to arrange this properly.
