Mike Portnoy's forum - "I Met Prince Tonight"

Mike Portnoy is the drummer, and a backing vocalist, for the progressive rock band Dream Theater. Someone on his forum posted a thread that read as such (there are a few responses I put in this post...go here to read the whole thing).

yes, the one and only, shopping at Cheapo. I asked him a quick question about Jellybean Johnson and then told him I wouldn't bug him anymore.

It was rather surreal regardless. I had a hard time concentrating on my shopping/browsing for the 20 or so minutes after that until I left to see an advanced screening of "Untitled."

anyone ever met him? or been in a similar situation where you are kind of in shock, and then after letting the celebrity be on their own, you're distracted the rest of the time you're at wherever you met them?

Someone asked "The Cheapo In Uptown?"
yep. he was there with a girl and maybe 1 or 2 other friends.

he was looking at 1 of the Recent Arrivals shelves, which ironically, had like 3 or 4 of his cds, sitting in the front of the row. A couple of them were "skuffed" too.

he then went over to the Classic Rock section.

He answered my question, kind-of half-seriously. I just asked him if Jellybean Johnson ever plays with him anymore. And he said no. He also said JBJ wasn't too good a drummer (which I'm still not sure how serious he was by that comment. His sense of humor is maybe hard to figure out?), which caught me offguard since I only knew JBJ from playing guitar, when he sat-in with Victor Wooten a number of years ago at a show here. I told Prince that, and it didn't really mean much to him. But JBJ was the drummer in his band at 1-time.

I'd heard stories of Prince shopping at Cheapo in Uptown back in the 70's and 80's, so I'm not entirely shocked by him being there. But it's a little different being star-struck like that when it happens. I was just thinking to myself when I saw him, it can't be, can it?

Someone else said:
JBJ not a good drummer? I don't know about that....always sounded pretty tight to me with The Time. But yeah, his humor is pretty....uhm strange.

Gohi

I am a huge Dream Theater fan (or used to be) and I actually met the guy who posted that after a concert of theirs. Not only is he a total annoying dick, he is antisocial and can't seem to have normal discussions with people. He made everyone else who was waiting for the band to sign autographs totally uncomfortable and annoyed.

So I feel bad that Prince had to interact with him.

Man, I've been at the Uptown Cheapo's a million times and never saw Prince. mad If Prince has been there before, it explains why they don't carry bootlegs. The other Cheapo's do.
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Okay, have to ask (this is me,after all) what was his royalness wearing?

if I remember correct, some kind of white shirt/suit or something. The thing I remember most is he had these gold earrings..a line of them on at least 1 of his ears.

I notice those for some reason, I think because I have a turn-on to women with different earring patterns, and have just naturally have a tendency to notice them on men as well.

Prince must have had the moonwrap on and confused Portnoy.

lol thankfully Portnoy wasn't the guy who met Prince or he would have tried to take a pic with him and he would have gotten all pissed and in an uproar when Prince rejected that idea.

Oops. I thought Portnoy was the guy who had the run-in at Cheapo's.
