prince had a run in with the guy from frankie goes to hollywood? Holly Johnson Insulted Prince With Phone Sex Gag
Posted on Nov 6th 2009 11:34AM by Stephen Dowling Holly Johnson picked up a prize at the Q Awards two weeks ago, an award celebrating the 25th anniversary of his landmark single 'Relax' from his old group Frankie Goes to Hollywood. A pretty out-of-the-ordinary experience for the quietly-spoken Johnson, who by his own admission usually avoids these kind of back-slapping industry events. 'Relax' was arguably the biggest pop song of 1984 in the UK -- despite being banned by the BBC's Radio 1 for its sexually provocative lyrics. It's believed to have sold at least 1.9m copies in the UK alone that year. Johnson tells Spinner, amid the clatter of a west London cafe near his house, the last time he accepted an award for the song, he got himself in trouble with one of the biggest stars of the 1980s... "The last time I picked up the award for 'Relax' was at the BPI Awards in 1985, which later became the Brit Awards, and we got the BBC Radio 1 Listener's Award, even though they weren't able to listen to it. And it was the only award voted by the public. I think we also got best band that year," he says. "I had to hand out an award to Prince for Best International Act, but I ended up offending Prince. At the time, the Village People had just released a record, and that had been banned, strangely. "I said, 'I've never met this guy, but we've had sex over the phone.' That was the title of the Village People track, and it was my attempt at humour. But obviously Prince's face on the big screen dropped a million miles, and his big bodyguard came walking towards me. He wasn't best pleased. He felt he'd been treated with utmost disrespect." Twenty-five years on, Spinner can report Johnson is suitably contrite. "I do apologise, Prince. It was never my intention to offend you in any way." [Edited 11/8/09 22:37pm]

This reminds me of Stan Freberg's comment that Prince should "develop a sense of humor."

haha.. Thanks for posting, Fury.
I like FGTH, Trevor Horn is such a fantastic producer. I guess "Relax" was the biggest single in the UK in 1984, while "When Doves Cry" was the biggest single in the US same year. I can imagine how much Prince was offended back then... but it was so obviously just a joke.. Holly Johnson - a great singer, imo Prince 4Ever.

I rememeber this well.....at the time, some of the press ( Smash Hits, Record Mirror), suggested that the sex over the phone story might have been true!

I remember this too. It was all a bit awkward at the time.
I met Holly years later - real sweet guy.

Some people just say that kind of stuff because it's Oral.
He was probably just trying to be funny. It's really just kind of dumb...I've said it too. Aren't we having oral sex as we speak. "The Lion Sleeps Tonight...

Prince? ----- I am guessing Frankie. Just imagine someone is giving you an award you don't know this person from adam and out of the blue that start saying they had phone sex with you. Come on it is disrespectful and kind of crazy. In addtion, the British press ran with the story

Prince was getting absolute pelters all night.
Billy Connolly had a big blonde streak down the back of his hair at the time and he told everyone that it was because Prince spat his chewing gum out at him. If he had ever watched Monty Python or Benny Hill he would have known exactly how us Brits are with humour. Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

He's probably be offended EVEN IF HE WAS GAY. Damn, don't blurt out personal stuff like that in public, even if its not true. Its called a private life for a reason. "The voter is less important than the man who provides money to the candidate," - Former Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens

That was ZTT, the record company. They had manifestos and were way into art and post-modernism. Pop music was a million miles better/smarter back then. You'll love this: http://www.zttaat.com/ima...p?catno=18 © Bart Van Hemelen
