Ok...First of all, if youre Prince, how do you make a funk album with NO James Brown influence. Thats like telling Kenny Wayne Shepard to make a Blues album with No Stevie Ray Vaughn influence.
Prince is still very much Funky in my opinion. To me, thats one thing that keeps him out of mainstream.(aside from other things like no major label, and the jazz stuff) The only thing I think Prince has lost is inspiration. Until Rave, He was so sexually driven and filled with so much passion and lust that it really came through in his music, lyrics and performances. Yes, I know he is 51 now and all that stuff is in the past, but it still doesnt change the fact that most of what put Prince on the map is gone. He is still a great live performer, but when it comes to new music... the fire has gotten a little dim.

[Edited 11/6/09 11:32am] As a Prince fan since the early 80s who stopped listening in the late 90s and has recently come back to hear what I've missed out on, I can definitely say No! Prince has not lost his FUNK! He has gotten deeper and jazzier...but that was a pleasant surprise! I hope he continues his jazz/funk... He said recently he will keep touring as long as he looks "this way" and that retirement is not in his vocabulary... When he gets old, he can still play jazz/funk until the day he dies...and not have to do old Rock posturing like the Stones! He has another place to go...and fans who want to hear it! Jazz/funk all the way, Prince!

Jazz/funk all the way, Prince! Well Im sure some Prince fans want to hear it, and thats great...BUT the vast majority do not. The sales of The Rainbow Children, and N.E.W.S prove that. Im a music lover..I love some Jazz, I really love some blues...but if he goes that direction, he will be getting further and further away from his main fan base. And at this point in his career, I dont think thats a wise move. Could you imagine going to the Staples Center, and its packed out with 40,000 fans. Then he embarks upon a 2 hour concert of Rainbow Children music with only a coulple of hits in the mix? I would seriously consider walking out after about 45 minutes of that. Prince needs to rock. Ive said this before...when does Prince get his biggest, best and loudest reactions? After he rocks! Prince and the Stones are quite different. They have lived a rough life full of alcohol and drugs, and it shows. they look HORRIBLE! Mick can strum a few chords on a guitar, but other than than he just does his strutting rooster impersonation and sings/mumbles the lyrics. Prince still looks amazing and can flat smoke a guitar and every other instrument on the stage. Not to mention the guy can actually sing good. So the Rolling stones comparison isnt a fair one.

My son plays electric guitar and bass very well...he is tuned into what is current as well as old school..I'm going to ask him when he comes home from college, as a musician, what he thinks about Prince's current music, and believe me! my son is very picky and skeptical about music--whether old or new!Although his opinion never changes mine!

& what, may I ask do "you" know about Funk in the 1st place, hmmm ... Not only does he still have it but he makes me want to extend, extend, extend, the music just like in the last church I attended--The Church of St. John Coltrane--where artists used to jam for three to four hours, playing music, as a form of worship to God! That is how "Joy In Repetition" makes me feel and reminds me of--how you can worship thru the Bliss of Music! It Ain't Over!

Do you really think songs such as Black Sweat, FUNK, Feel Better Feel Good Feel Wonderful are not great funk songs. Also I remember you saying in a previous post you had every show from the O2 21 nights. I went to a few of these shows and a couple of aftershows and I can ensure you he was funky as fuck. If you think he's lost it why would you have a copy of all the shows. I do not consider Prince to be a truly great funk artist at all. I am not saying funk revolve around prince. I am a funkfiend & I do listen to james brown as well as others. If George Clinton can call prince a funk musician who are we to say he isn't.

I ain't criticizing prince I asked has prince lost the funk because his old work was more funkier. Take blacksweat for instance a brilliant track but the prince in the 80's would've given an extended version which would've been even funkier. Now I hope my critics understand this.
