i like the lyrics and vocals. The beat is fast and awesome. Turn the 86 version up real loud

It just makes me "groove". I can't explain it... I was cleaning while it was playing not too long ago, and my hips started going, and I found myself dancing around.
Some songs just do it, and others don't. I don't like "Little Red Corvette". (please, people- don't start with the speeches... ) "Love Hurts. Your lies, they cut me. Now your words don't mean a thing. I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..." -Cher, "Woman's World"

I completely understand what you mean. It's not that great to me either. "You put water into a cup, it becomes the cup...Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend." - Bruce Lee

I've had this song since 86 and always found it quirky compared his previous material. That made it enjoyable for me. I'm not too fond of the recent jazz remake of it though. When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

It was one of those songs from one of those prolific, funky, and memorable eras. It was just Prince being Prince.

Well im sorry u dont like large room. I love it! but if theres one song i dont understand whats so good about it...it has to be "All my Dreams". i like the beat and vocals but the weird voice and piano playing that extends the song makes me wanna fast foward. It has a great ending though.

This song--the original, not so much the new update--just makes me happy. I don't know how to describe it in more detail. But I will say this: My last full-time job made me think of this song a lot, and when I left it to go freelance, I thought of the song again and felt really confident I was doing the right thing.
Maybe it's a good thing not to get this song. If the line "Did U ever feel that life was like looking 4 a penny in a large room with no light" has never resonated with you, that's a blessing.

Its effervescent and avante garde sounding. I admit when I first heard it several years ago I did not see what much of the big deal was. In time I learned to appreciate it, especially thiking about the time frame and what the band was doing as a cohesive working unit. It must have been fun to be working in those sessions. That adds to the appeal for me.
And that ending with them singing "lightttt"...awesome.

I love both versions for different reasons. I think it's just an amazing composition. I just love the juxtoposition of the upbeat music with seemingly bleak lyrics. The music also is so hard to define - it's pop, jazz, rock, funk, kind of calypso... so many styles mixed effortlessly. And that outro seems so onpoint. I don't get it either.
Its a good song: playfull, quirky, and placed on any of his recent albums it would have been a highlight (that tells something about the quality of the other songs on them first). But its hardly 'an essential'. Not in terms of style, but in terms of 'status' i would like to compare it to songs like Life can be so Nice and Eye Know: a solid 'albumtrack' but not a real masterpiece.

I've always liked it for many of the reasons already
stated. The new one is ok because I like hearing a release-quality version of the song, but of course it is missing the zest of the original recording. I made a kind of mash if you will of both versions. It's kind of like the new version sampling the old one to get in the horns and vocals that are missing. It came out ok, maybe a little kooky. If anyone would like to check it out, let me know. "Hyperactive when I was small, Hyperactive now I'm grown, Hyperactive 'till I'm dead and gone"
