Prince and Lisa Stansfield... what happened ?

I have read long time ago, that (the great) Lisa Stansfield didn't wanted to record a Prince song,

I believe it was in the mid-1990s when she was a rather big name. She declined to record a Prince penned song, because she didn't wanted to end up as a Prince protegé. I think she "talked down" to some of the former Prince protegées, Vanity, Apollonia, Sheena Easton...?

Anyway. Not so nice of her to say it like that, I think a few Prince fans was offended a bit...

Does anyone remember this, and know the full story ?

What Prince-song did she decline to record ?

I have also read in a magazine (I can't remember which?), a list of Lisa Stansfield's favourite top 10 albums and Prince's Parade was one of the albums on that list.

So Lisa Stansfield isn't a Prince hater after all wink

(Sorry if all this common knowledge here)

As far as I can remember she was always a Prince fan, she was supposedly meant to support him at Maine rd in manchester but their scheduling was off so Prince used the Pasadenas. I think she did turn down a song but to be fair she was right to do so-her sound was quite traditional soul and she was quite serious about her work then

I remember a story about her turning down his advances. Supposedly he kept sending her flowers and asking her out, but she declined. She said, she loved his music, but he just wasn't her type. wink

I remember in the mid-90s,she turned down a Prince song. She said that she is a huge fan of his but "his reputation takes a nosedive when it comes to the female artists that he produces".She's basically saying that she didn't want to become 'just another Prince girl',singing a sexy song that he wrote and produced.

She released an album in 2006, and has acted in various things since then. She's about due to drop an album again, but who knows. She was HUGE in Europe, a major star.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but to my knowledge: Lisa was offered a song from Prince, but she refused it, politely. She later said that a lot of women that were associated w/ Prince were (considered) sleazy, and she didn't want to be in that realm of thought. She was sort of right. It doesn't mean the women WERE sleazy, but they were guilty by association. Lisa had a classier image she made for herself than Prince had made for Vanity 6, Apollonia 6, Sheila E., etc.

Makes me wonder what song she would have had from Prince, or what song would have fit her voice and style. Although I hate "Baby A GoGo", I somehow feel that if her band rerecorded the song (like Nona Hendryx's band did), it might be a good song for her. I can't think of another off the top of my head that might have fit her.

I'm taking that response as pure sarcasm (which, of course, I can fully appreciate).

Yeah, she would, and did. Prince doesn't always dole out the best songs for folks anyway.

I think she would-coz her vibe was very different and she took her career very seriously. She would not have simply beengreatful coz it was Prince, rightly or wrongly. Her songs were a bit too subtle at the time
