He wouldn't address men directly in his lyrics. I think he would repress his homosexuality/bisexuality. Prince is a living contradiction really, what with his multi-coloured, whatever sexual preference goes 'Uptown' philosophy set against his later, less opened minded views. He'd be closer to coming out of the closet in his earlier years, but still wouldn't, and then getting towards the perma-suited funk crooner Prince would increasingly, secretly, hate himself. He'd change from the passionate and free (actually frustrated, but no less passionate) Prince into a frumpy, by-numbers older artist who replaces the passion borne out of his frustration with increasingly straight-laced behaviour and narrow-minded views. His early years would've afforded far more opportunities for him to express his true homosexual self with the clothes, dancing, movies and whatnot. As a 50+ year old and no longer being able to dip his toes in that time and culture's pool and still remain publicly straight he'd do a 180 and set himself up as a wanna-be settled husband kind of Prince, still full of self-hate but helpless and too weary to do anything about it. The music would suffer, naturally. It has suffered.

Given your scenario, considering a 'gay' Prince would be relatively repressed and closeted, do you think his friends thus are not diverse? I always pictured him being surrounded by all races, sexual orientations, and religious backgrounds. But when I really, really think about it now--since the 90s, I'm not so sure it's that diverse.

Ted Haggard, Mark Follie, Charlie Christ--all of them don't have very diverse friends. A 'gay' Prince would probably follow the same template, no? I mean this strictly hypothetically in the context of your scenario of course.

Not diverse, no. Just like Prince would seem to be embracing diversity and an open-mind his friends would in fact be all just like him, putting on the same show. I don't think he's ever done anything other than surround himself in a very controlled manner with people of a like mind. Or at least close enough or passive enough to be manipulated to that point.
