Prince vs. Michael Jackson vs. Cameo vs. Rick James - Official!

For those of you in or around central London who like to move your bodies to funky music, apparently there is a battle-of-'80's-funk taking place tomorrow (Saturday) night at the relatively new 93 Feet East (in Brick Lane) http://www.93feeteast.com/

For that perfect combination (CURRY & FUNK), why not check it out and at least show everyone who has THE FUNKIEST FANS!

Taken from the site...:-

JANUARY: 11th BASHY FIGHT NITE
MICHEAL JACKSON VS PRINCE VS CAMEO VS RICK JAMES
ALL ROOMS: 8pm - 2am. £8 Before 9pm, £8 after
Hosted by the UK's finest male and female MCs, MYSTRO and EST'ELLE, who will be counting it off and delivering expert ringside analysis and mic chat. All night long in the main room the BASHY residents, J33 and CRACKIN' SKULLZ, will only be playing records relating to the funkiest figures of twentieth century music: Jacko, Prince, Larry Blackmon (Cameo) and Rick James. All the classic joints plus anything produced by them, containing samples of their music, lyrics bitten from them, hot joints from blood relatives, remixes, cover versions, and our own butta blends of their music with hip-hop accapellas. It's gonna be all good, like our man Ol' Dirty Bastard says "
Larry Blackmon is good, Michael Jackson is good, Prince is good, they all
good, they're some of the best to me. But Rick James, he is something out of
the ordinary, he is funky I'm tryin' to tell you, he's got ta get his props.
That's just how it is." The bar is grindin' too Jack, as ZONGAMIN, MIDNIGHT MIKE and CRACKIN' SKULLZ' will be keeping it gangsta lean and party up. BASHY FIGHT NITE is promoted by Don ‘Dada’ Kings, Nice Nice Entertainment."

Aah, it feels great actually having something noteworthy to post for a change.

Bugger, you beat me to the post. I just read an article in "The Metro" over lunch. The venue is supposed to be pretty good, never heard of the show/gig tho!

Yeah I noticed that little 'squiggle' picture in the Metro earlier on.

I may go along as I've been meaning to check out that venue for some time...ever since they hosted the Air Guitar Championships. Supposed to be quite swish, with a nice recording studio as well, like, Londons own Electric Lady Studios, and probably endorsed by the worlds greatest air guitarist.

I may of done. Until a few months ago all I ever listened to was Prince, George Clinton and rap music. Now I've started listening to 80's stuff as well (Lot's of it actually. That's how I discovered Cameo.) Give me the names of some tracks and I'll download them and tell U what I think.

Also, I may of heard his music but I just didn't know who it was by. It took me 5 months b4 I discovered that the album Chaos and Disorder was by Prince. My cousin had it in her collection, I put it on out of curiosity and loved it. By that time I already had Sign o’ the times, Come, New Power soul and Dirty Mind (I think)

Ahhh, I think I just worked out Y I don't know him. I live in England. According to this book he brought 6 singles out in the late 70s - early 80s and none of them hit the UK top 40. I'll check them out now anyway. I'm curious.

Have you heard of MC HAMMER?

'U Can't Touch This' sampled the bass of Super Freak

also, Pray from the same album sampled 'When Doves Cry'

...I think!

Rick James fans don't hate on me--I've felt him since he busted out of L 7--but, I can't help but think that he had a personal rivalry going with Prince. Think about it: Prince had the Time...Rick came up with Process and the Doo Rags; Prince had Vanity 6...Rick came up with The Mary Jane Girls. Even Rick's video for "Glow" was a throwback to Purple Rain, right down to his puffy shirt. biggrin
