Well... actually it was Stuart Matthewman that contributed that vibe... and he was a HUGE part of Sade's sound.

It was a combination of him and Wah Wah Watson (guitar), Federico Pena (a MONSTER on keys, and a good friend of mine from DC), Mike Neal (bass), and Gene Lake (drums).

Also, don't forget that the GREAT Leon Ware wrote a lot of material on that album.

Agreed... Matthewman is quite the musician/producer, and it was he who played on Maxwell's first three albums (not Sweetback). Matthewman is definitely a big reason why Sade's albums are so good (guitar, sax, keys and general vibe). I was disappointed when I saw that he didn't contribute to Maxwell's new one. Stuart's, as well as Paul S. Denman and Andrew Hale's contributions to Sade's albums are definitely underappreciated. One beef I have regarding their contributions is that people most often mistakenly refer to "Sade" as her/she -- when it's always been well documented that "Sade" is the band name (the lead singer is Sade Adu). Every album is definitely a band effort, not just Helen Folasade Adu. So technically speaking, those guys are both Sade and Sweetback (not just Adu's backing band).

I stand corrected....

Mathewman is a great multi-musicianist. His sax and guitar are indeed the ground
work for sade's vibe...andrew on keys and paul on bass realy contnues that vibe.

I know that they are not just sade's backing band(I'm' a sade fanatic) but remember without ms. adu, they cant be called sade. (hence sweetback). it's just been so long since i herd from any of these guys.

but back 2 maxwell....I still have not herd urban hang suit, I finna download it now.

...and let's not forget he even got Michael B to play drums on one of the "Now" tracks. Was it "At The Party"? I can't remember.

Looking forward to those London gigs, though!

"Now/At The Party" is one track actually, so you're right on both counts. I never did read the credits, so if Michael B is on there, I missed it. Must. Go. Look. Now. OCD. Working.

Damn it....now you're going to make me look....

Michael B is listed as
-Live Drum
It's not listed what song he was on, but it's assumed by the notes that wherever there was a live drum track, Michael B was the player.
James "Magoo" McGregor is listed as the live Drum Kit Programmer for Michael Bland
Matthewman, Maxwell and 2 others also did drum programming outside of that.

Matthewman did keyboards, guitar, and bass, as well as "horn arrangements on various, but not all" tracks.

Maxwell usually keeps the same set of musicians for the course of an album, just as he did for BLACKsummer'snight, so it's safe to assume wherever live drums are heard, it's Mr. Bland.

"Maxwell," is cool...I like his new cd. cool

me too .....love maxwell he's hot razz

I just like the music...I don't anything about him as a person. I had Maxwell's "Urban Hang Suite," which I owned for about 5 years and I haven't purchased his music until this recent cd.

No having enough money has helped me to be behind the times with the music scene. That's just the way it goes sometimes.

Unplugged is one of the best ever. I used to make love to my ex while that CD played. The gospel cover of Nine Inch Nails' "Closer" is worth the cost alone. Embrya is organic, silky, and an incredible journey. NOW is a bit more straight forward, but still retains Max's classic style. BLACKsummer'snight was worth the wait. I'm anxious for blackSUMMER'S night, and blacksummer'sNIGHT over 2010, and 2011.

And I did NOT get paid to make those statements.

Now, if only we could get Prince to listen to Blacksummer'snight and pick up some lessons about how to record modern R&B in a band setting.

If u look at his concert per4mances he steals all his moves 4rm Prince. So its obvious he is a fan

Princebonics are SO 10 years ago.

Prince has stolen half of what he's done on guitar and with band arrangements from Sly, James, Rick, Santana and a dozen others. Nothing is that original anymore.

Besides, Maxwell has long talked about being a Prince fan, even in recent months on his Twitter, and through the years. So even if Maxwell was sitting in a chair, his being a fan is kind of known.

My saying that Maxwell stole a lot of moves 4rm Prince is not a criticism of Maxwell.Eye already knew he was a big fan of Prince. I've been a fan of Prince almost since the beginning . I'm well aware that Prince's influences of past artist b4 him is all in his music and bands.

Every artist has an influence. That is how they become who they r. Plus don't tell me about Princebonics EYE CAN WRITE ANYWAY EYE CHOSE 2 U FOOL..
.....
eye will ALWAYS think of prince like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. eye mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that prince wasn't of this earth, eye would not have been that surprised. R.I.P. prince
