Kara said: The live recordings are what made me and keep me a fan. I was only a casual fan until I happened upon the world of Prince bootlegs. The only reason I buy the studio albums is out of guilt for trading/downloading dozens upon dozens of bootlegs. Whenever I buy one of his CDs, I listen to it once and then throw it on the pile with the rest. I only revisit the studio albums if I don't have a live version of a particular song I like. I can't think of a single instance in which I prefer the studio version of a song to any live version.
I find his live performances to be rawer, funkier, and more passionate than his studio work, which I feel is sometimes too overproduced and cold. When it comes to live music, I like to hear how a song's arrangement changes from show to show, I like to hear the spontaneous moments, and I actually find it interesting to hear a rare mistake or flaw. I might be alone here, but 2002-present has been my favorite era of Prince shows. Even when I believe that his albums are sub-par, his concerts never disappoint me. I believe his live performances are what will keep his legacy intact, and I wish he would officially release more live material for this reason. [Edited 10/29/09 13:30pm] I couldn't agree with you more. Unless it's a "band" album there's nothing better then the live stuff. His recent live stuff is some of his best, especially the ONA tour material. There's also nothing better than attaining a live show you personally attended. It's like preserving a moment in time. The studio stuff of recent years lacks soul especially when he's playing all the instruments. I think he does it out of laziness. All you have to do is listen to the studio version of Fury compared to the live SNL version & there's no contest. One's a demo & the other's a godsmack, goosebumping thrill ride. For someone who's a control freak & supposedly obsessed with his legacy he sure does a half-ass job preserving it.Oh well we could go all day on that one. [Edited 10/29/09 16:40pm]

I agree and disagree with this. I agree that audience noises pisses me off. I hate it, rather just hear music. True soundboards are great like the Lovesexy shows in Japan...ahhhh...i wish EVERY bootleg was this clean sounding. I disagree that his CD versions are better. I'd say 99% of the time, his live versions are FAR superiour to his studio versions, in many many ways. I liked Indigo Nights I thought it was cool when Prince was telling the audience about taking pics of him and not being able to go outside-he can be very funny sometimes.

It depends. I generally loathe sped up or slowed down versions of tracks. Sometimes he does that. That's not a Prince thing I dislike though, that's just a general thing I don't like when any artist does.
Overall though, most of Prince's live stuff I enjoy, especially some of his jams of rock and soul classics and some of his more rare material.

Purple Rain for the most part was recorded live..... and the 86 tour was awsome live. E.

I can't say that I PREFER live, but Lord do I love them! I think it's because I can close my eyes and pretend I'm there, something I can't do with the studio recordings which I love, too. There IS also something about hearing him talk during the live work, as someone mentioned. One of my best friends and I differ on this. She clearly prefers studio work, but I can listen to live over and over, too! Never trust anything spoken in the presence of an erection.

to me it depends on the track. I've heard live stuff way better than the studio tracks & I also think some of his live work falls short of studio quality... it just depends u know. I think I mostly prefer studio as far as listening to a track but nothing beats seeing him live & I think that's y the live boots r so highly sought after. I know that's y I do.
