I Wonder U conversation with Claire Fischer Does anybody have more info on this? Like who the other voices are, maybe when/where it was recorded? It's an interesting conversation about the layering, but I can find little info about it. When I did a search it came up with everything obvious and didn't answer my questions. Listen2Prince !!

What are your questions?
The vocals are listed in the album credits. It was recorded at Sunset Sound, around 17-28 April 1985. Wendy and Lisa are credited with background vocals. Clare worked on it in August 1985. Wendy and Lisa worked on overdubs at Advision Studios, London, late October - early November 1985

I'm not talking about the track itself.
There's a boot going around the has a sort of lecture with someone asking Fischer questions about how he arranged the strings and such for I Wonder U. I only have about half of it, and I'm not looking to get the rest through here, I just want to know if anybody knows when/where the lecture took place and if anyone knows who was hosting the lecture. I'm just trying to get my collection labeled and documented as accurately as possible. Listen2Prince !!

Well....ok. Just be more specific next time. I've never heard of the boot myself. I had no idea where you were coming from.

It's a really interesting conversation. It's fun to hear about the creation process. I believe it's part of a Red Bull Music Academy lecture. If you google that plus Clare's name (note the spelling), you'll find more info.
And since this isn't a boot, but rather a legitimate lecture that Prince had no part of, I believe it's something you actually can ask where to get.

The conversation was posted on Clare's website a while back. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

It's really cool he plays different versions of the track with different orchestration on each one. Fascinating stuff. I have it on Eye Records 'Wow' boot.

I saved the audio from Clare's site, but I of course misplaced it. Thanks for reminding me about the WOW boot. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Saw this topic and found the video on Google and I have to say I appreciate Mr. Fisher even more. The man is a huge talent and the outtake that he played for I Wonder U was phenomenal. Now I wish I could hear some of the alternate takes of the work he did for Jill Jones album. Who ever said Prince has lost it - has lost it. The Kid's still got game!

I think he means why did Prince edit it down so much to 1:39? I love the groove of "I Wonder U" so much that I, too, wish it was longer!

I think he means why did Prince edit it down so much to 1:39? I love the groove of "I Wonder U" so much that I, too, wish it was longer! That's my point... Prince didn't edit it down to 1:39. It was never any longer in the first place. So you can say "I wish that track was longer" or "I wish Prince had made an extended version of it". But to say that it isn't "full length" or that Prince "edited it down" is untrue and misleading. These words have an actual meaning which is not subject to people's opinion or misuse.

Okay, maybe not so much the length of the song but obviously during the interview there was more played of "I Wonder U" that is in the actual "full length" version, either it's longer or had more parts that were not used for the released version.

Prince's outtake version (before Clare's involvement) is even shorter than the album version... it's interesting because it's just drums, bass, and a Fairlight synthesizer (apparently all played by Prince), with Prince singing lead vocals (which were later wiped from the track)-- Wendy's vocals are there, too, but buried underneath Prince's... I guess this is the version recorded during his famous one day recording session, where the first 4 tracks of Parade were recorded in one take. I always find it interesting that Prince can make such cool songs with so few ingredients...

I just re-listened to it and there's no difference between the version played at the interview than the Parade version other than it might be slightly mixed differently. My bad. I was just too happy the first time I saw this interview that my imagination thought it heard other differences. I just listened to the I Wonder U outtake and yes it is very cool, no orchestra. Just raw funkiness!!

I finally saw the video and loved the orchestra versions... the vocals are so clear... i wish this stuff was released...

Clare says that Prince did not use either of his orchestrations on the LP version, but this is not true... Clare's flutes are on the album...
