Prince vocal performances

What do you think of Prince vocal performances lately?

When he sang recently "why you wanna t m so bad" and "i´m yours" he didn´t singed the full melodies of the songs. I mean, he does a kinda of rap/talking instead of singing the right melodies. He does it especially when he is not using his falseto tones. I understand the man is a genious and is aging, his voice is still great but i think he should focus a little more on the melodies while singing.

I've noticed a slight 'holding back' in his voice - maybe he's hurt his voice or he's just being more economical with it these days? he does scream at the end of the new FGFBFW from Lotusflow3r.com, although the majority is sung in a rap/talk style.

I'm sure there's a reason.

Yeah I have noticed a slight change in his voice recently, even on FBFGFW I felt he was finding hard when screaming, it almost sounds like it hurts, But im no voice coach,he is 50, and still sounds great..

i noticed a bit of this.

The falseto is better than ever but the lower register is mostly rapped now.

However, just listened to The Word. Fantastic lower register vocal harmony and melodies and thats 06.

I posted this in the "New Tracks Now Available" thread in the Lotusflow3r forum:

I love the bluesy arrangement of FBFGFW! cool

Mountains/Shake Your Body is freaking AWESOME! I wish it was a 20-min jam! But, why is Prince having a background singer double his falsetto vocals??? I've noticed he has done this on the last few performances where falsetto is featured. eek

Not only that, but the new Why You Wanna... is sung in his normal register! We all chalked it up to just being for the rehearsal on the Doc FB version, but, this is a full live performance in front of an audience, and still no falsetto. I am alarmed! Has P. lost the ability to sing in falsetto, or at least to sing in it strongly? shake Say it ain't so! Even if he isn't able to get much projection with it anymore, I would still like to hear just HIS voice singing the lines, and not have him be drowned out by a background singer! rolleyes

I think the low register is lovely and sexy. The way he sang controversy was brilliant. There was melody and funk all mixed up in his voice.

He has been rehearsing & giving concerts & he had said his voice was tired from all the singing. I do one afternoon of PS Karokoe and my voice is buggered. It's also autumn, a lot of people get throat niggles. Maybe that's the reason in combination with voice tiredness. But he can keep doing it if he likes, I dig it.

Hey girl, I like Controversy too. Yesterday I played the DVD with his greatest hits again.
Prince could sing the phonebook and it would still be funky!
But think he should use his "lower voice" more. His speaking voice - deep and low, lot of resonance- is very pleasant too. By the way "Here" is my new favorite, even if it's slightly falsetto. What do you think of it?

You crack me up! You're right, the phonebook would still be funky razz
You'll have to show me the dvd, I don't have any except rave unto the joy.
"Here" is really gorgeous... it's pretty, it's smooth, it's sexy, voice, words, guitar total production. Gets a 10/10 from me.

Both very good points...If his voice is tired and/or he has throat niggles (LOVE that phrase! lol), then I wouldn't want him to overdo it. neutral
