Interesting topic. I'm glad it was brought up because I too felt the gesture odd and a little off putting when I saw the performance.
As a gay man (and a happy one at that) I found the gesture to be stereotypical and tacky. As Nouveau Dance said "dated." I wonder what the motivation was for the hand gesture...was it non offensive humor as someone pointed out? Possibly.
Maybe Prince can't say "gay" with a straight face.
Are we reading too much into it? It depends on who you ask. Most gay people might be offended by the gesture. I was mildly offended.
I'm reminded of that Australian talent show where Harry Connick Jr. (one of the judges) was offended by the group that was portraying The Jackson's in black face. They said they ment no harm in it but it was terribly offensive to most people especially black people. For some, Prince's gesture is as offensive.

Why can't you just enjoy this performance, that's what it was meant for.
How can you fill 5 pages with this nonsense. Prince just did a handmovement, replacing the word gay. SO WHAT!!!

Why don't you just pay attention to how pleased and happy he looked, or Bria for that matter, or the crowd, they all went bananas. Or how incredibly good this short performance was, how well Dance 4 me sounded etc.

You know what, keep discussing crap like this, I'll be waiting for tickets and dancing my butt of at his next concert.

The existence of Jesus Christ has also be scientifically proven.

You dear piepie have feelings...obviously emotional feelings about Prince's music. Now, I'm assuming this because you're on a Prince forum.

Can your emotional feelings be scientifically proven? No. Do they exist? Yes. Can the existence of love be scientifically proven. No. Does it exist? I believe it does.

It would be foolish to waste time trying to explain to you how the bible was written by different men over several thousand years by the guidance of the Holy Spirit while remaining amazingly scientifically, prophetically and historically accurate. More proof of the bible being a reliable and historically accurate book exists than for any other ancient writing that men base their beliefs on. (Homers Iliad etc.)

Believe what you want to of course but the fact remains...the truth is the truth whether you like it or not. Why is Jesus attacked so much? Do you ever hear of the Budda or Muhammed or any other god being attacked the way the name of Jesus is attacked? He said it would be this way. They will hate you because they hated me. The bible says, "He came unto His own, but His own received Him not".

Yes. Sins do have varying degrees of severity in terms of wordly punishment and consequences, but in terms of their ability to send you to hell they are all equal.

In the bible sins of stealing, murder and the like - carried certain penalties and then there are abominations (homosexuality, idol worship, adultery, beastiality etc.-usually punishable by death) In the old testament adultery was punishable by death. When the woman caught in adultery in the new testament was about to be stoned Jesus said "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone". She obtained God's mercy as was not stoned to death. In that instance, same sin different consequences. Therefore in the eyes of God sin is sin. If I've never raped a woman but I've thought about it. I'm guilty. If I've never murdered anyone but I have hated and wished someone dead then I am still guilty and deserving of an eternity apart from God. If I have never stolen but I have told a lie. I am a liar and therefore guilty. All have sinned.

It's bullshit...plenty of religious authorities have said it doesn't mention homosexuaity as bad anywhere in that work of fiction called the bible

Romans 1:21-27

21For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.

24Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.

26Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. 27In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.
[Edited 10/15/09 9:20am]

Fair enough...3 things worry me:

1) You KNEW the passages

2) Several high powered religious figures ie Priests, Bishops etc have spoken out that the Bible DOESNT say anything about homosexuals ..se either they dont know anything or you are reading too much into those vague passages....I see sex with animals in that extract

3) Prince is in trouble because im pretty sure you little book has something to say about Divorce....twice

Prince loves gay people!!

He doesn't love their lifestyle.

Where the confusion comes in is when you condemn one sin and not another.

From a Christian perspective, gay relationships are sinful just like greed or hatred or lying or stealing or heterosexual fornication. Sin is sin.
It's extremely hard to convince people to go a different way when you've spent most of your life promoting the opposite. But if Paul can do it so can Prince.

180s allowed...

There is one question I like to ask people who say that, and my question is this:

Would Jesus refuse or turn away a gay person from having communion at his table? If he did I would be disappointed and very sad.

I don't mean to turn this into a P & R topic folks, sorry boxed

I so tried not to say anthing but when I see questions like this my heart can't turn away. Jesus would not turn away a "gay" person. In fact Jesus would be at a lot of places people would find nasty and unworthy. He wouldn't be there to bring hate, but he wouldn't be there to uplift something that is not natural either. Jesus came to die on a cross for all because we all have fallen and committed sins. All sins are wrong and without the Holy spirit living in us we all would perish. Jesus wants us all to rise above the flesh and live as his sons and daughters. Once people have a true meeting with Jesus nothing is ever the same. Jesus is love and when you feel that love and know it is for you if you were they only person to ever live he still would've died for you. Than all the mess goes out the door. We all need to repent, ask for real forgivness and walk in the way Jesus did when he was on earth. We all know right and wrong and that is why there will always be struggles within ourselves to find fault in others that only convict us of what we know is wrong even though we try to justify the behavior we know is hurting us and those around us.

to be honest, i don't care anymore one way or the other. i watched the
performance clips and i thought they were ok.

i caught this thread and wanted to read it but i'm listening to the
new batch of thom yorke songs:

feeling pulled apart by horses
the hollow earth
hearing damage
all for the best
skirting on the surface (live)
super colider (live)
judge jury and executioner (live)
lotus flower/moon on a stick (live)

and they're so good, so different, so advanced and quirky in places
and so old fashioned and simply beautifuly melodic in others, that
i truly feel like prince is still one of my favorits but no longer
in any way shape of form the leader of the pack.

his ideas have become stale and repetitive as have his antics and his
manerisms. he's more camp and 'gay' than anyone i walk into in a gay
club these days, that's for sure, lol.

the only reason i still frequent this site is because i like all of
you guys and i like realing your comments and follow the discussions
whenever they are to my liking. but prince's antics have become a far
off by-product these days.

whenever he releases new music, i'm there to check it out and, mostly,
to enjoy it. but his persona went off a cliff somewhere in late 1999.
funny how many people found his prince persona to be off putting when in
retrospect, prince was far more likeable than the newly reborn Prince.

This is not a Christian vs gay issue. I am nobody. Christians are people. It is God we should be concerned with.

You can love anyone you want.
The sin is not in the love. It is in the sex.
What is homosexuality without the sex?

I sincerely do not mean to offend you please help me understand why it is that I have never seen an elderly homosexual couple? If they exist (they probably do) are they so rare that I would never see two elderly men or women holding hands or kissing in public? I have seen many young men and woman homosexuals in public. More now than when I was a young kid. More now than ever. Why is it that I never see elderly couples on the news at the gay pride marches? There are lots of young sexually active folks. Plently of middle age sexually active folks. But rarely if ever elderly folks. Could it be because there is no sex involved?

Again, I love you. And God loves you. Christianity is not a religion It is what you call a person who belives that Jesus Christ is God and has accepted the sacrifice he made for their sins and then out of love and gratitude sets out to live as He commands.

I am truly sorry if I have offended you. It was not my intention.
There was a time when I wanted to have sex with practically every attractive woman I'd see. That was just as wrong in the eyes of God. No more no less.

I am truly sorry if I have offended you. It was not my intention.
There was a time when I wanted to have sex with practically every attractive woman I'd see. That was just as wrong in the eyes of God. No more no less.

Thank You. Beautifully said...

I thought that's what I saw. and as a gay man I was slightly offended but I quickly got over it and forgot about it until it came up here. it was an intentional move but I don't think he meant to hurt anybody by it, I hope not anyway.

why'd this thread turn into Christians vs. the gays? nuts some of us are both and I'm more offended and hurt by that than what Prince did. prince.org for ya lol

Could it be because there is no sex involved?

uhm... I walk down the street and am attracted in everyway possible to a member of the same sex... that makes me gay. it's alot more than sex. I certainly don't want to have sex with every attractive male i see. I like romance and a hell of alot more. I AM HUMAN I HAVE THE GOD GIVEN ABILITY TO LOVE JUST LIKE YOU, it just happens to be with the same gender.

IGNORANT! yes there are elderly gay couples. We didn't(in some places still fighting for) ask for gay marriage for nothing eek open your eyes confused do all couples hold hands and kiss in public? NO, you can't spot every couple walking in the street. disbelief

Hetero'sexual' couples survive into old age without sex and so do homo'sexual' relationships.

You see a young homosexual couple and you think you know all about their sex life!? NEWS FLASH: YOU REALLY KNOW NOTHING. homosexuality does not = anal sex either!

you say it's not your intent to offend but that's exactly what you've done with that bullshit you've just posted. I forgive you for it but darling you really don't love me don't fool yourself. and I don't need you to tell me GOD loves ME or what Christianity is so get off your high horse with it.

Controversial gesture during "Controversy"? Was it appropriate for that song? Surely you don't want him to be Politically Correct during that track. Prince is a lot of things but one thing he certainly isn't is a homophobe. "less-then-enthusiastic attitude towards homosexuality" (sic), is there a history of homophobic statements and activity? Not sure about that. However, I DID notice that particular gesture and thought... hmmm that's new.

Wanna bet?

He has stated he has gay FRIENDS. More than that he is a man of God who leaves Him up to the judging. Those who are true followeres of God and abide by his rules love everyone. However they don't commend/support/agree with unGodly actions.
