YouTube policies

Has Prince backed off of trying to block every YouTube video with a reference to him? I recall a video of a child dancing being pulled because 'Kiss' was playing in the background - or something like that.

Then I read that Prince and YouTube were 'talking'.

A quick search shows 'many' videos with Prince references and/ or songs being heard in the background.

Does anyone know what the story is?

It was "Let's Go Crazy", not Kiss.

And yes, Prince worked out a deal with YouTube.

Thanks - so does that mean videos won't get yanked?

No, they might still. Anything can still get pulled if Prince doesn't want it there.

So - hypothetically - if someone posted a YouTube video about how to play a Prince song, would it be unwise to discuss it here?

Unless you want it pulled by Youtube. And don't post it here coz it's sure to get yanked by Youtube real quick, and a possible lawsuit on your hands to deal with....

Prince's deal basically still only covers stuff that he authorises to be out there (like the shelbey videos for example).

If he hasn't authorised it, you'll probably get taken down.

It's a legal grey area as far as YouTube is concerned. But Prince seemingly has no shades of grey.

General Copyright Inquiries: My original recording of a cover song was removed.

Recording a cover version of your favorite song does not necessarily give you the right to upload that recording without permission from the owner of the underlying music (i.e., the song writer).

For more information, visit our Copyright Tips page.

Copyright Tips

What is copyright? Copyright is a form of protection provided for original works of authorship, including literary, dramatic, musical, graphic and audiovisual creations. "Copyright" literally means the right to copy, but has come to mean that body of exclusive rights granted by law to copyright owners for protection of their work.

What is copyright infringement? Copyright infringement occurs when a copyrighted work is reproduced, distributed, performed, publicly displayed, or made into a derivative work without the permission of the copyright owner.

Posting copyright-infringing content can lead to the termination of your account, and possibly monetary damages if a copyright owner decides to take legal action (this is serious—you can get sued!). Below are some guidelines to help you determine whether your video is eligible or whether it infringes someone else's copyright. You can also find copyright FAQs within our Help Center.

As a general matter, we at YouTube respect the rights of artists and creators, and hope you will work with us to keep our community a creative, legal and positive experience for everyone, including artists and creators.

How To Make Sure Your Video Does Not Infringe Someone Else's Copyrights
The way to ensure that your video doesn't infringe someone else's copyright is to use your skills and imagination to create something completely original. It could be as simple as taping some of your friends goofing around, and as complicated as filming your own short movie with a script, actors, and the whole works. If it's all yours, you never have to worry about the copyright—you own it! Make sure to follow the other guidelines in the terms of use, too.

Be sure that all components of your video are your original creation—even the audio portion. For example, if you use an audio track of a sound recording owned by a record label without that record label's permission, your video may be infringing the copyrights of others, and may be subject to removal. YouTube offers a library of authorized music to liven up your video.
